SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: This is a 10-month, full-time, 2-year grant funded position for UMass Dartmouth. The Assistant Track & Field Coach/Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics will serve on the athletic administration team and play a significant role in the daily operations of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field programs. The successful candidate will perform all of the duties associated with being an assistant coach for six of our largest and most racially diverse teams in the department. The individual will work with the Associate Director of Athletics to support our student-athlete development and leadership program. The incumbent will participate in a series of micro-internships to gain a broad-based understanding and exposure to key administrative areas within the athletics department, including strategic planning and budget management, alumni engagement, recruiting, and student-athlete well-being, academic success, and diversity and inclusion.
Follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.
EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• In coordination with and under the supervision of the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, this individual will perform duties associated with managing and serving as the Assistant Coach on the Women's and Men's Cross Country, Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field staff, including, not limited to assisting with practice and competition preparation, scheduling, team travel, recruitment and retention of student-athletes, community service, fundraising, and marketing and promotion
• Organizes, plans, schedules, and conducts safe trainings, practices, and conditioning activities for speed/power event student-athletes
• Supervises competitive track and field contests and helps to facilitate travel options with appropriate administrators
• Plays an active part in coordinating an annual recruiting plan with the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country to meet roster goals and to attain the full roster growth potential of all six teams
• Helps to identify, evaluate, and actively recruit academically and athletically qualified student-athletes
• Conducts correspondence of interest through conventional and digital communication
• Evaluates talent off-site at competitions and through recruiting materials
• Collaborates with Admissions liaison for assessment of qualifications
• Assists in the planning and execution of annual program support activities, including hosting home competitions; fundraising events; promoting alumni and key constituent engagement; and facilitating professional connections for current students with alumni
• Monitors the academic progress of student-athletes to ensure eligibility and academic standards are maintained in compliance with University, Conference, and NCAA expectations
• Explores and promotes opportunities to strengthen student-athlete engagement across teams (e.g., cross-team community building activities, SAAC, Student-Athlete Empowerment Coalition) and across campus (e.g., co-sponsored community service events through the Leduc Center for Civic Engagement)
• Serves as a member of the Peak Performance administrative team to facilitate student-athlete leadership programming (e.g., DiSC assessment workshops, captains training, First Years' Academic Success Seminar, Career Readiness series, and annual NCAA SAAC Legislative Summit)
• Serves as liaison with the Little East Conference (LEC) Office to promote involvement with the conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and LEC Undivided (i.e., the LEC's diversity and inclusion initiative for student-athletes of color)
• Assists the Deputy Director of Athletics with student-athlete engagement events (e.g., Mental Health Week, NCAA Division III Week, National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Diversity and Inclusion Week, National Student-Athlete Day)
• Attends department staff meetings and trainings
• Represents the institution by attending conference meetings
• Participates in a rotation of micro-internship opportunities within the department, obtaining experience and exposure to more leaders within the department (e.g., Alumni Engagement Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator, Compliance Coordinator, Business Manager, Director of Athletic Communications, Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine)
• Performs other duties as requested
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree
EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level. Experience in recruiting student-athletes
Former collegiate playing experience
OTHER: Ability to work flexible hours which includes evenings and weekends
Local and regional travel required
Valid driver’s license

• Strong commitment to professional development
• Knowledge and ability to implement University and NCAA policies and procedures
• Ability to obtain and maintain CPR, AED, First Aid certification
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Coaching experience at the NCAA Division III level
• Previous experience in athletic administration at the collegiate level
• Master’s Degree
This is a temporary non-benefitted, grant funded position.
