| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Trademarks and Licensing program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of the largest in the nation, with gross revenues exceeding $7 million. Revenues from the program are a major component of the University’s ability to honor the Carolina Covenant, which guarantees a debt-free undergraduate education to students of limited financial means. One hundred percent of the department’s net revenue is directed to need-based and merit-based scholarships.Â
In addition to the licensing program, the Trademarks and Licensing Office has responsibility for trademark management and labor code management. This position also has responsibility for co-branding of University trademarks with current student athletes as part of the NCAA’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules and for managing the co-branding of University trademarks with a group licensing program for former student athletes. The position approves prospective licensees and negotiates license terms; authorizes use of all University trademarks by the Athletics Department and its multi-media partner; and ensures that all University trademarks are protected both domestically and internationally.

| Position Summary |
HYBRID: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Trademarks and Licensing Coordinator is responsible for managing, promoting and licensing the appropriate use of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s brand identity (names, logos, designs, trademarks, etc.) and related intellectual property assets. The Coordinator will work with licensing stakeholders to develop & implement branding initiatives that enhance the reputation of University and drive revenue generation. In addition to directing the department’s social media presence, the coordinator also assists the Executive Director in data analysis, report creation and strategic initiatives.
The University’s Trademarks and Licensing program is one of the largest in the nation, generating over $7 million in gross revenue annually. This revenue directly supports the University’s mission of scholarship, ensuring access to learning and success of each rising generation. This position plays a key role in maintaining this impact, as 100% of the department’s net revenue goes toward funding need- and merit-based scholarships. In addition to the Licensing program, the department has responsibility for trademark protection and labor code of conduct oversight.Â
Other duties include approving artwork and prospective licensees, negotiating license terms, authorizing trademark use by University departments, organizations and corporate partners, and ensuring protection of University trademarks both domestically and internationally. The Coordinator also administers co-branding of University marks with affiliated and external entities, oversees use by current student-athletes under Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules, and administers group licensing opportunities for former student-athletes.

| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, along with extensive knowledge of social media platforms. Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present effectively to large groups, executives, and senior administrators. Some travel may be required.

| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Demonstrated understanding and proficiency in financial and sales data analysis and reporting, as well as preparing reports and administering revenue and expenditure projections and alternatives.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with others; evaluate and implement project goals while applying established University policies and procedures as needed.
