The University of Oregon Intercollegiate Athletic Department's primary purpose is to provide a unique opportunity for student-athletes to be developed, tested, and encouraged to reach their maximum potential in every aspect of their lives. The department has approximately 280 academic & classified employees and hosts over 600,000 spectators annually and represents the University of Oregon in athletic competition with other universities & colleges.
The Trades/Maintenance Worker 2 is responsible for independently performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks and coordinating with journey-level tradespeople in the completion of work tasks at all athletic facilities (Autzen Stadium, Casanova Center, Moshofsky Center, Hayward Field, Howe Field, PK Park, Jaqua Center, and McArthur Court). Duties will include but are not limited to, general labor, painting, plumbing, carpentry, equipment maintenance/repair, routine electrical work that does not require a license, and the care of sports surfaces. In addition, this position assists other trades maintenance 2 workers and journey-level trades workers with maintenance and repair tasks at all athletic facilities, as well as custodial labor as assigned.
This position assists in creating a work environment that emphasizes customer service, teamwork, and the protection/preservation of the department's physical assets.
This position independently determines the tasks necessary to effectively maintain the athletic facilities for multiple uses. The person in this position assists other athletic department personnel and contracted vendors in maintaining all other athletic facilities. This position reports to the East Operations Manager and will at times coordinate the work of part-time and student employees.
The trades/maintenance 2 worker operates the following equipment as required, such as but not limited to the following: boom trucks, tractors, forklifts, blowers, scrubbers/sweepers, power washers, welders, cutting torches, vacuum extractors, paint sprayers, skill-saws, grinders, drills, chemical sprayers, and assorted hand tools. This position will be responsible for driving department vehicles to run errands and deliver supplies/equipment.
Work Conditions
Outside work in inclement weather as well as working nights and weekends. May require heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, ascending and descending 60/70 stairs three times per hour, and working at heights up to 125' above the ground. This position requires the willingness to work in an environment containing dust, odors, and high levels of noise and occasional working with or around chemicals and caustic compounds such as pesticides, herbicides, disinfectants, and cleaning agents (may require the use of environmental protective devices such as face masks and rubber gloves). This position also requires the willingness to work from ladders scaffolds, scissor lifts, and other above-ground locations such as on roofs.
Prolonged physical labor, walking, bending, climbing, and stooping are requirements of this position. Ability to effectively provide customer service to the public (1 on 1 and in event situations), well-groomed, good communication skills, tactful, and courteous.
This position requires the ability to operate and respond to 2-way radio communications.
Work Schedule
This position will generally work a schedule that is Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., which will support events at all athletic department facilities for both department and non-department events. Shifts will vary from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. throughout the school year/competitive seasons. This position works some flex hours, non-traditional workweeks, and some overtime according to need.
Special Requirements
• Valid driver's license and ability to obtain UO driver's certification
• Ability to obtain UO forklift certification within 6-months of employment
• Three years of general building maintenance experience in one or more of the following trade areas: carpentry, electrical, mechanical, painting, plumbing, and welding
• Skills, knowledge, and abilities in maintenance (e.g. plumbing, carpentry, and painting).
• Ability to interface and work effectively in a team environment with co-workers, customers, vendors, and university staff, emphasizing outstanding customer service.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, prints/diagrams, and procedure manuals.
• Proficient in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Proficient in maintaining a safe and safety-conscious workplace.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Three years of facilities maintenance work experience in Higher Education.
• Three years of progressively responsible trades-related facilities work in facilities greater than 50,000 sq. ft.
