Responsible for supervision of the vehicle maintenance shop staff and bus services. Ensures safe, reliable transportation for fleet and motorpool vehicles. Coordinates travel requirements for Athletics and other departments. Performs skilled motor vehicle repair and maintenance work. Work is performed in accordance with standard practices of the trade.
Examples
Performs exchanges, minor rebuilds, overhaul of small engines such as lawn equipment, carburetor rebuilds, and similar assemblies. May partially tear down motors or engines, inspect, repair or replace defective parts, and reassemble the motor. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and performs repairs, including custodial scrubbers and extractors. Checks and repairs electrical and cooling systems. Tests motors and engines for satisfactory performance after reassembly. Installs heaters and similar accessories. Oversees more extensive engine or transmission work contracted to local shops. Maintains records of work performed and parts used. Tunes up and makes required adjustments on motors and engines. Oversees recordkeeping on all vehicles through the State's Vehicle Fleet Management database. Responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, and timekeeping of bus drivers. Occasionally drives buses for transport of students to events overnight and weekends. Performs related work as assigned. Reports to the Business Manager, Facilities Services.
Physical Condition Experience
Five or more years’ experience in auto repairs, preferably as a certified ASE (Automobile Service Excellence) automotive technician. Should have considerable experience in the major and minor overhaul and repair of motor vehicles, accessories, and component systems. Experience in supervision of personnel, particularly fleet services, is desirable. Familiarity with diesel engines required.
Knowledge
Working knowledge of automotive repair and maintenance techniques. Skill in the use of hand tools and shop equipment. Ability to read and look-up information pertaining to a particular vehicle for repair. Excellent ability to apply knowledge of repair techniques and mechanical principles and to locate and diagnose defective mechanical operations. Basic proficiency in use of office computer applications. Knowledge of Texas State Vehicle Fleet Management System or ability to be trained in its operation.

Education
High school diploma or GED required, plus experience; completion of technical courses in automotive repair desirable. Licensure for state vehicle inspections is desirable.
Additional Requirements
Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must be able to use and read test equipment in repair of vehicle. Must have the ability to work independently, diagnose complex mechanical issues, and be well-organized, especially with data records. Must be able to communicate effectively and have good interpersonal skills. Regular reliable attendance is required. *Employment physical exam required. *A valid CDL Texas driver's license with air brakes and passenger endorsements is required or must be obtained within 60 days of employment. *Must be available some nights and weekends. *Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Low) and requires a criminal background check.
