About Louisiana Tech Athletics

The Bulldogs and Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech currently sponsor seven men’s and nine women’s varsity sports programs at the NCAA Division I level. Competing as members of Conference USA, the athletics department’s student-athletes have continued to excel on and off the field of play. The Lady Techsters basketball team has enjoyed tremendous success as they have won the 1981, 1982, and 1988 National Championships. These teams were led by then player, Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Coach, Kim Mulkey. Across all sports, Louisiana Tech has captured 42 national titles, 164 conference titles, and 9 conference division titles.

Success would not be possible without the state-of-the-art facilities at Louisiana Tech. Men’s and Women’s Basketball currently play their games at the Thomas Assembly Center, Football competes at Joe Aillet Stadium, Baseball competes at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, and Softball competes at Dr. Billy Bundrick Field. Notable Louisiana Tech athletics alumni are Teresa Weatherspoon, Head Coach of the Chicago Sky of the WNBA; 14-time NBA All-Star and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, Karl Malone; 2008 NBA Champion with the Boston Celtics, P.J. Brown; four-time Super Bowl winning quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Terry Bradshaw; and former Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays of the MLB, Charlie Montoyo.

Position Summary

Reporting to the President and as a member of the President’s Cabinet, the Vice President & Director of Athletics leads an intercollegiate athletics department consisting of about 350 men and women student-athletes and a staff of approximately 116 people. The Vice President & Director of Athletics will ensure that all areas of the Athletics Department demonstrate a commitment to maintaining compliance with NCAA, C-USA, Louisiana Tech, and State of Louisiana rules and regulations. The Vice President & Director of Athletics will lead and guide the department to competing as a high-level Group of Five athletic department.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Develop and communicate a clear vision that will ensure the athletics department succeeds in fundraising, facilities development, and the recruitment, retention and promotion of student-athletes and athletic personnel while aligning with university goals and objectives.
• Lead with the highest standards of integrity in all athletic, academic, and business matters.
• Promote an environment that fosters each student-athlete’s health and welfare, academic and athletic achievement, and overall growth and development. Ensure that all student-athletes have a positive experience at Louisiana Tech.
• Demonstrate sensitivity and commitment to equity issues of gender, ethnicity, and sport.
• Continue to improve on the championship culture throughout the athletics department that empowers and propels coaches, student-athletes, and staff as they compete for C-USA championships.
• Lead the development of athletics fundraising goals and create strategies to meet fundraising priorities. Meet with donors and prospective donors and actively engage in ongoing fundraising activities, as well as promote the athletics program, internally and externally, throughout the University community.
• Provide effective communication as the spokesperson for Louisiana Tech athletics with the media, alumni, donors, fans, parents, and prospective athletes.
• Develop strategic marketing to increase visibility, exposure, and season ticket sales for all sports.
• Ensure budgetary and fiscal accountability of the athletic department in order to adhere to a balanced budget through enhancing revenue generation and monitoring spending.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of faculty, administrators, staff, student body, student government associations, alumni, friends, booster clubs, and the local community regarding athletics at Louisiana Tech.
• Provide full compliance with all applicable Federal, State, NCAA, C-USA, and university rules and regulations.
• Participate actively in conference meetings and activities.
• Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the President.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and manage successful and diverse athletics departments and/or organizations.
• Sports oversight, particularly revenue generating sports programs, is preferred.
• Proven ability to work with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, and external constituents.
• Demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• High personal and professional integrity.
