Shepherd University seeks an experienced leader, fundraiser, and project manager to serve as Vice President for University Development (
VPUD
). Reporting to the President, the
VPUD
is responsible for leading and providing strategic direction for: major gifts fundraising; athletic development; annual giving; corporate, government and foundation relations; and alumni affairs. The
VPUD
works with the President, executive staff and the campus community to set appropriate fundraising and communication agendas based on institutional priorities; and serves on and works in close partnership with the boards of the Foundation, Alumni Association, and the Board of Governors to develop and execute fundraising strategies for the University. As chief development officer, the
VPUD
identifies, cultivates and solicits major gifts.
*Given the unique challenges and opportunities associated with higher education, the successful candidate will possess significant higher education experience in a variety of roles, demonstrating progressive levels of leadership and fundraising management.
*Experience in strategic planning and implementing strategies aligned with the institution’s goals is essential. This leader will be a strategist, a proven project manager, a collaborative partner, and high performer.
*The candidate will have proven data-driven and analytical skills – proficiency at framing and solving complex problems, familiarity using databases as well as other software to track donations and donor information for setting goals and identifying opportunities for improvement.
*Proven leadership and management skills are integral, with experience leading a team and managing budgets.
*The ideal candidate will be an accomplished motivator and mentor, an effective manager of people, and a visionary change agent with demonstrated success in supervising, mentoring, and inspiring staff.
*Experience successfully interacting and collaborating with a variety of constituents, including but not limited to university presidents, boards, foundations, faculty members, athletics staff, annual giving staff, alumni affairs staff, and advancement staff.
*The candidate will possess the strong ability to build and maintain positive relationships with donors, alumni, and other stakeholders.
*The candidate will possess the ability to solicit and close major gifts.
*External relations skills are essential.
*The ideal candidate will have exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills (able to tailor communications to multiple audiences such as academic leaders, major donors, boards, and university leadership). Precision, timeliness, clarity, and accuracy in written communications are vital.
*The ideal candidate will have marketing experience.
*Experience effectively working with boards, administrators, faculty, coaches, alumni, corporate and community leaders.
*The successful candidate must have a minimum of five years of fundraising experience.
Event management experience preferred.
Doctoral degree preferred
