UHM Student Academic Success, Student-Athlete Academic Services

This position will join a team of faculty and staff academic advisors and student affairs professionals in Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS), under the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Success. SAAS provides academic support services, including academic and athletic advising, registration assistance, tutoring, and career and personal counseling to all student-athletes at the University of Hawai'i (UH) at Manoa. The SAAS supports the recruitment, retention, and graduation of all student- athletes at UH Manoa. The program monitors academic eligibility, certification, and prepares documentation as mandated by the NCAA. SAAS provides comprehensive support services to facilitate the personal and academic growth of student-athletes and fosters increased academic engagement, responsible citizenship, and leadership.

Duties & Responsibilities:
A key duty of the successful candidate will be to build collaborative partnerships with a broad range of on-campus organizations and programs with the goal of ensuring an inclusive and supportive student environment. These collaborative partnerships must be grounded in best practices regionally and nationally. The individual in this position will be expected to develop relationships with professional associations like NACADA and NCAA to establish national networks for best practices for SAAS programs and projects. This person must also keep abreast of peer and benchmark practices and standards in advising and engage in regional and national discussions. They must maintain active engagement with relevant national professional organizations (which may include, but is not limited to, serving on regional and national committees advisory boards, presenting at conferences and sharing research, as well as planning and implementing campus-based opportunities). This person will also be responsible for leading changes in policies and procedures for advising based on national trends.

Minimum qualifications:
ASSISTANT SPECIALIST
Master’s degree and 30 credits beyond the Master’s Degree in liberal arts discipline, education, counseling, or other field related to the duties of the position from a college or university of recognized standing
At least three (3) years of experience as an Academic Advisor and/or Learning Specialist at the next lower rank, or its equivalent
Knowledge of post-secondary curricula and academic requirements.
Substantial background providing guidance to students in assessing academic and career goals
Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and familiarity with current research regarding student success
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a culturally sensitive manner with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds
Ability to create an inclusive learning environment to support the needs of students with learning differences
Knowledge of retention and graduation issues in higher education.
Experience providing academic support (ie tutoring, academic coaching, or other learning services)
Knowledge of NCAA academic eligibility rules and university-wide academic programs
Demonstrated ability to facilitate groups
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
Strong organizational skills and the ability to establish priorities and see tasks to completion
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and uphold established policies and procedures
Experience designing and implementing programs and initiatives at the college or university level ASSOCIATE SPECIALIST
Doctorate degree in liberal arts discipline, education, counseling, or other field related to the duties of the position from a college or university of recognized standing
At least four (4) years of experience as an Academic Advisor and/or Learning Specialist at the next lower rank or equivalent with demonstrated increasing professional maturity, including at least two years of experience directly related to the current job assignment;
Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, including the work of assistants when appropriate
Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators as necessary Desirable qualifications:
One year or more experience working in an NCAA Division I student-athlete academic center as an Academic Advisor and/or as a Learning Specialist
One year or more experience in a managerial or supervisory position
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations associated with providing learning support for students with disabilities
