The Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Communications will serve as a member of the athletic department's executive team. This position is responsible for the communication of news and marketing of St. Mary's 13 varsity athletics teams, including 12 intercollegiate NCAA DII programs, through creative visual and written content, effective promotion to local constituents, and engaging outreach to the campus and external communities. This position will oversee an Assistant Director of Communications, two graduate assistants and it will maintain the athletics social media platforms in coordination with University Communications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops, designs and edits unique video, graphical and other visual content for website, social media and the Athletics media source, Rattler Network, to ensure thorough and engaging athletics coverage is maintained pre-game and post-game for all sports across all platforms.
Manages social media accounts with utilization of latest trends and best practices in coordination with University Communications.
Creates and implements differentiating marketing strategies, community outreach initiatives and in-game promotional activities for each sport to increase engagement and game attendance among students, faculty, alumni and the greater community.
Interviews, trains, evaluates, coaches, and offers professional development and oversight of a graduate assistants and internship students.
Assists with coordination, promotion and content creation for special events such as donor socials, athletics banquet and Hall of Fame ceremony.
Manages technical setup and maintenance of live video broadcasts of games.
Have a familiarity with writing and editing news releases, game stories, feature articles, scripts and other materials for dissemination to national, regional and local media.
Develops and maintains a close working relationship with leadership and establishes positive relations with the Athletics administration, coaches, staff, student-athletes as well as the rest of the University's faculty, staff, students, alumni and fans.
Serves on assigned committees, boards or commissions and may be assigned to NCAA conference or sport committees, boards, etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required, preferably in Communications or Marketing.
Two or more years of professional experience in creative content or marketing required; Sports marketing, design and photography experience, experience in a University athletics setting preferred.
Experience as a student-athlete or professional internships in collegiate athletics may apply.
Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance.
Must maintain a valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance, and complete the University Van Driver Training within 90 days of employment date.
Must be able to work flexible hours including sporting and non-sporting events that may occur on weeknights, weekends, and possibly holidays; Occasional travel may be required.
Must have the ability to demonstrate advanced skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint) including applicable statistical tracking software (i.e. statcrew); Experience with virtual meeting platforms such as zoom;
Knowledge of publication design and video editing software. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite preferred. Knowledge of Sidearm Sports website client preferred.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong public relations and customer service skills with an ability to implement diplomacy and discretion at all times; an ability to work effectively with communities across the university.
Must have excellent grammatical, spelling and fact checking skills; Knowledge of AP style and attention to detail.
Must have a high ethical standards and a strong sense of confidentiality; ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines; thrive in a complex work environment; displays solid problem solving and interpersonal skills; works well independently and as part of a team.
Must have strong self-judgment abilities to assist in the preparation of department personnel policy information. Use discretion to complete work assignments. Initiative is frequently required to complete work assignments. Decisions are made regarding policy interpretation and individual work priorities.
Must have a high attention to detail and be able to organize workflow, coordinate activities, balance simultaneous projects without loss of efficiency in a multi-tasked environment, and manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
Must have strong oral communications skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive and effective relationships with members of the campus community
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business.
While performing this role, the employee work outdoors when they work at athletic fields, sporting events, practices, or job sites, work indoors in a gym or other athletic facility.
While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock. And may be exposed to loud and distracting sounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner.
Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
