Widener University, an NCAA Division III Commonwealth Conference member of the Middle Atlantic Conferences, is currently seeking an Assistant Athletic Trainer in the Department of Athletics. Reporting to the Head Athletic Trainer, this role provides support to Widener’s 21 athletic teams throughout the academic year. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is a member of the athletic training staff responsible for providing high-quality care for the student-athletes participating on the 21 NCAA Division III varsity teams. The primary objective is to help provide the safest possible sports experience for the student-athletes by preventing as many injuries as possible, and properly managing the injuries that do occur. Additional responsibilities may be assigned in areas such as committee work, and administrative duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to) :

Essential Duties:

  • Provides prevention, evaluation, recognition, treatment, diagnosis, referral, and rehabilitation of injuries for student athletes. Assists in the selection and fitting of protective equipment, including special taping, pads, or braces.
  • Serves as the primary medical contact and liaison between members of the coaching staff, student-athletes, parents, and physicians, other on and off-campus allied health personnel for assigned sports.
  • Maintains safe environment for student athletes to include decision making involving the ability of student athletes to safely return to practice or competition following an injury and/or illness and communicate participation status with the appropriate personnel.
  • Provides assistance to staff members regarding the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries for all student athletes.
  • Provides athletic injury care coverage during all practice, strength and conditioning sessions, and competitions, at home and some away events.
  • Prepares and maintains appropriate athletic injury care records, statistics and reports as required utilizing the present computer programs for such purposes following all NCAA and NATA (National Athletic Trainers’ Association) guidelines.
  • Adheres to compliance with all federal, state, university laws including FERPA and HIPPA; and the maintenance of the highest level of confidence in regard to the various confidential information that the sports medicine staff is exposed to in regards to student-athletes and coaches.
  • Ensure that all insurance procedures including pre-authorizations are followed prior to referring student athletes to all providers.
  • Understands responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery, and other compliance requirements.
  • Attends conventions, conferences, clinics, etc., to maintain Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and BOC (Board of Certification) licensure.
  • Facilitating and overseeing excess medical policy, tracking open claims, parent communication, updating core provider up-to-date information. Communicates with student-athletes and coaches about the department’s health insurance policies. Coordinates the disposition of medical bills incurred by student-athletes as well as the medical insurance for our student-athletes, as assigned by supervisor.
