Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications
Northern Illinois University (NIU) is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Athletic Trainer. This is a full-time, 12-month position with benefits. Under the general supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer, this position is responsible for assisting in the management and administration of all phases of the athletic training operations.The mission of NIU Athletics is to enhance the University, community and region through service and engagement while developing champions in the classroom, in competition and in life. With long standing traditions and core values centered on family, NIU Athletics is home to 17 NCAA Division I sport programs. Northern Illinois University, chartered in 1895, is a comprehensive teaching and research institution with over 15,000 currently enrolled students and houses seven (7) degree-granting colleges—Business, Education, Engineering and Engineering Technology, Health and Human Sciences, Law, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts. Centrally located in DeKalb, Northern Illinois University is 30 miles west of Aurora, 65 miles west of Chicago, 36 miles west of Naperville, and 45 miles southeast of Rockford.
Responsible for assisting in the management and administration of all phases of the athletic training operations.
Athletic Training Services Provide athletic training services to sports as assigned. Services include prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and coverage of practices/contests as deemed necessary and assigned by the head athletic trainer. Medical Record Retention Maintain complete medical records for assigned teams, including insurance referrals, daily treatments, physician referrals, and injury reports in conformity with the Athletic Training Policies and Procedures. Relations and Teamwork Maintain positive relationships with team physicians and medical specialists. Supervision Provide direct supervision of student athletic training staff, graduate and undergraduate. Departmental Support Voluntarily attend all athletic events to promote audience participation and support for NIU team efforts, when practical under the circumstances. Licensure Maintain working knowledge of advances in the field as well as current membership in the National Athletic Trainers Association, Inc. and the Illinois Athletic Trainers Association, Inc., State of Illinois Licensure. Promote public relations beneficial to the university, the athletic department and the profession. Safety and SA Well-Being Work in cooperation with athletic department staff to access available resources concerning the following areas of athletic care: safe and protective athletic equipment and facilities, nutrition, recognition and education of substance abuse, personal and mental hygiene, first aid and CPR. Departmental Needs Assist with departmental needs as requested.

Bachelor’s Degree N.A.T.A. Certification Eligible to meet Illinois Athletic Trainer Registration requirements. Athletic training experience in school or clinic setting. Experience as certified athletic trainer.

Master’s degree. Minimum 1 year Athletic training experience at the university, college, or clinic level. Experience with NCAA Division I athletes. Minimum 2 years work experience as a certified athletic trainer.
