Responsibilities

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Assistant Athletic Trainer is charged with the responsibility of care and treatment of athletic injuries; game and practice coverage; maintaining accurate medical records; acting as a preceptor for masters level athletic training students, and in the absence of the Head Athletic Trainer, maintaining all policies and procedures of the Athletic Training Program.

The Assistant Athletic Trainer is charged with the responsibility of care and treatment of athletic injuries; game and practice coverage; maintaining accurate medical records; acting as a preceptor for masters level athletic training students, and in the absence of the Head Athletic Trainer, maintaining all policies and procedures of the Athletic Training Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Responsible for maintaining a current knowledge and expertise in the field.
• Responsible for acting as a preceptor to masters level athletic training students and student work study assistants in the basics of sports medicine techniques; applying protective tape, wraps and dressings; primary injury care; use of heat and cold modalities; and basic rehabilitation techniques.
• Provides injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and referrals for Jefferson University varsity athletes.
• Home game and practice coverage for varsity sports as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer.
• Provides emergency care during home contests for visiting athletes.
• Interacts with students, co-workers, visitors, and other individuals consistent with the values of Jefferson.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES needed in addition to Essential Functions:

• Responsible for conducting rehabilitation programs for injured student athletes in helping to return the student athlete to functional status.
• Responsible for conducting preventative therapeutic programs to enhance student athlete’s ability to avoid future injury.
• Maintains adequate injury and rehabilitation records. Ensures the confidentiality of medical records within current standards of practice of state and federal laws.
• Refers student athletes to seek appropriate medical assistance for follow-up and/or additional surgery.
• Works under the supervision of designated university team physician and orthopedic surgeon on all medical concerns.
• Responsible for additional duties assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer and/or Director of Athletics.
• Assists in inventory control and supply acquisition in accordance with University procedures.
• Assists in processing insurance claims through the University’s insurance area and the student athletes’ primary care insurance.
• Arranges emergency transportation at home events, practices, and game sites.
• Assists in developing emergency plans for all team practice and game sites.
• Arranges physician appointments through the sports medicine referral network.
• Communicates with parents/guardians on matters concerning the health of their child (while maintaining patient confidentiality as requested by the student-athlete).
• Travels with the Philadelphia University teams when schedules and circumstances dictate the need.

Qualifications

EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION:

• Certification in good standing as an Athletic Trainer by the NATA BOC governing body must be maintained.
• Licensure by the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine must be maintained.
• Certification in CPR/AED/First Aid

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an appropriate area of specialization. Additionally, they should have a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree in a relevant area of study.
