The Assistant Coach of Football supports the Head Coach in all aspects of the intercollegiate team including coaching, recruiting, scheduling, program administration, and budgeting. Additional responsibilities may include performing administrative duties as assigned at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.
Essential Functions:
Demonstrate strong teaching ability and technical knowledge of the sport including: ability to plan, organize and conduct practices; assist in developing, teaching and implementing specific game plans
Assist Head Coach in setting appropriate individual and team strategies and performance objectives.
Possess effective written, oral and interpersonal communication skills including ongoing ability to work respectfully and constructively with student-athletes, prospective students, faculty, staff, the Director of Athletics and other coaches on and off campus.
Supports and encourages student athletes’ engagement and success in the College’s academic program. Develops and encourages student social behavior that represents the values and standards of the community.
Work with the Head Coach to assess team needs and set recruiting objectives and strategies including identification, contact with, and pursuit of academically qualified students-athletes abiding by
NESCAC
and
NCAA
regulations. Travel as necessary to attend/videotape secondary school competitions.
Perform administrative tasks as requested by the Head Coach (e.g., budget, facilities, and travel requests, etc.) in an organized, timely fashion. Maintain a willingness to work with the news media and/or other departments (e.g., Alumni Relations, etc.) as requested, or participate on departmental or College committees.
Maintain knowledge of coaching best practices and

and
NCAA
rules and regulations; attend conferences, workshops, meetings, and participate in coaches’ groups and professional organizations as appropriate.
Represent College in a mature, positive, professional manner.

The targeted hiring range for the role based on the position requirements is $53,000 – $58,000.

Required skills include:
Knowledge of football skills and strategy and the ability to effectively teach them.
Ability to motivate and effectively communicate with student-athletes.
Willingness and ability to actively recruit qualified candidates to Bowdoin.
Commitment to being a positive member of the Athletics Department, the College community and the ability to influence their athletes to do the same.
Working knowledge of

NESCAC
rules and an understanding of the philosophy behind them.
Administrative skills such as prioritization, organization, and budgeting are needed.
Must be self directed and motivated and be able to work independently and work under pressure.
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the standards of the College’s current Motor Vehicle Policy are required. Current

, and First Aid certification must be maintained.
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in physical education or related field OR a minimum of 5 years of coaching experience at the post secondary level and/or professional competitive experience.
Minimum of 5 years of coaching experience at the post secondary level and/or professional competitive experience OR bachelor’s degree in physical education or related field.
Demonstrated effectiveness in coaching football is required.
Preferred:
Experience successfully recruiting at a highly selective institution.
Variable depending on season. *It is expected that coaches will recruit during the summer months requiring possible additional travel. *Frequent overnight travel with student athletes is required during the football season.
Ability to work weekends and evenings. *Coaches are expected to be on campus during the academic year (late August – Reunion Weekend in June) and are expected to keep hours during this time that make them readily available to students.
For full time coaches, this may involve greater than 40 hours per week in season of primary sport and varied weekly hours out of season.
