Assistant Coach for Men’s Basketball

Part-time

Cairn University’s Department of Athletics is seeking to fill the part-time position of Assistant Coach for Men’s Basketball. Cairn University is a NCAA Division III school and participates in the United East Conference.

Department Purpose

The purpose of the Department of Athletics at Cairn University is to provide NCAA division III sports which allow our student athletes to honor God by growing through integrity, humility, and discipline in pursuit of athletic excellence. Cairn’s teams are built in a competitive environment and led by coaches who desire that their team learns to exemplify the walk and life of the Christian faith and recognize that sports provide a tremendous training for life and service. Cairn seeks to develop student athletes that are willing to stand for Christ, serve with humility, lead with dignity, pursue knowledge and excellence while being able to handle adversity.

Cairn is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

All Department of Athletics personnel have ministerial responsibilities to integrate spiritual development into their leadership, coaching, and support for student athletes. For coaches and staff, this takes the form of prayer, Bible study, and encouragement of students’ spiritual discipline alongside the physical and mental discipline which characterizes an athletics program.

Position Summary

The Assistant Coach will assist the Head Coach with practice and game planning execution and will be required to attend practices, meetings, games, and team events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Coach will assist the Head Coach with practice and game planning execution and will be required to attend practices, meetings, games, and team events.

• Candidates should understand and demonstrate tactical aspects of soccer and be able to lead drills and training sessions with the Head Coach.
• This position will assist in the player recruiting process through email communication, phone calls, and attending tournaments of high school prospective student athletes.
• The Assistant Coach will also assist the Head Coach in organizing and implementing fundraising events.
• Provide positive feedback and constructive criticism to athletes to improve individual performance.
• Create a Christ-centered team community by focusing on athletes’ spiritual growth and maturity.
• Promote the ideals of Christian sportsmanship in all phases of conducting an intercollegiate athletic program reflective of a Biblical University.
• Support the Head Coach by establishing appropriate and effective mentoring relationships with student athletes.
• Participate in additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support the overall operations and goals of the department. This may include contributing to cross-functional projects, assisting colleagues, or responding to evolving priorities, even when such tasks fall outside the specific scope of the role.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities

• Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
• Valid driver’s license is required.

Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Prior playing or coaching experience at the collegiate level preferred; successful high school or club coaching experience will be considered.

• Occasional lifting, carrying, and setup of athletic equipment, training gear, or team supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Use of hands and fingers to operate sports-related equipment, computer systems, mobile devices, and standard office equipment.
• Visual and auditory ability to observe athletes’ performance, ensure safety, and communicate effectively in both indoor and outdoor environments.
• Ability to travel with teams for competitions, training camps, or recruitment events, which may include overnight stays and long-distance driving.
• Stamina and flexibility to work long, irregular hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays during the competitive season.
• Exposure to a variety of weather conditions while coaching outdoor sports or supervising team activities.
• Focused attention required to plan strategies, analyze performance, and make real-time decisions during practices and games.
• Ability to remain composed, encouraging, and authoritative in high-pressure situations, including competitions and emotionally intense interactions.
• Capacity to lead and motivate individuals and teams, address sensitive issues, and model sportsmanship and institutional values.
• Adaptability to respond to changing schedules, athlete needs, regulatory requirements, and program goals.

This position requires a valid driver's license, the ability to operate a motor vehicle, and adherence to university travel and safety protocols.

Located in Langhorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Cairn University exists to educate students to serve Christ in the church, society, and the world as biblically minded, well-educated and professionally competent men and women of character. Students earn bachelor’s degrees in various areas including Bible, Education, Music, and Business Administration; and graduate degrees in Business, Divinity, Education, Organizational Leadership, Worship and Music, and Counseling.

Cairn is a conservative evangelical institution within the protestant tradition that employs faculty and staff who profess Jesus Christ as personal Savior; agree to Cairn’s Foundational Statements and serve students in a ministerial capacity through imparting and upholding biblical instruction, prayer, and mentoring. Members of the faculty are required to integrate biblical instruction in their respective professional subject areas.
