Position Summary
|
This is a dual position reporting to Athletics and Diversity and College Access departments.
The assistant coach responsibilities range from the planning, recruiting, coaching, developing, implementing, communication and administering of his/her program to achieve University and Department objectives to teaching duties within the Department of Athletics. Exhibit behavior that enhances the respect for the student-athletes, the athletics program, the University, and yourself in the conduct of your professional responsibilities. The position of assistant men's basketball coach reports to the head men's basketball coach.
DCA Success Coach provides a holistic support service to underrepresented students (i.e., African American) in promoting appropriate and responsible choices on academic, social, and personal development to mitigating their academic and personal success. They will serve as a spokesperson and advocate on matters pertainingto student success by connecting them to on- and off campus resources to support their transition to campus and providing them the resources for their personal, academic, and professional development.
The DCA Success Coach helps identify barriers to academic success and assist them in creating and applying action plans for overcoming challenges. They also help students maximize their potential by supporting and assisting students in gaining effective strategies and behaviors that can support their personal and academic lives. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of success coaching and mentorship related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment. Support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and recruitment efforts for the unit to support underrepresented, first-generation, and low-income students' success. Develops internal partnerships in support of program awareness and provides student interventions as needed.

Required Qualifications
| - Minimum three years of basketball coaching, playing or related experience - Minimum of two years of experience advising/coaching students of color, fostering experience students, first-generation, low-income students - Knowledge of coaching and mentoring techniques - Knowledge of processes and resources for organizing and leading group and collaborative activities - Candidates must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills - Ability to balance multiple demands and effectively organize and manage time and tasks - Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community | |
Preferred Qualifications
| - Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university - Demonstrated strong commitment to athletes as students - Demonstrated experience with: - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, social work, student personnel or related field - Demonstrated ability to work with as well as understand the needs and characteristics of student served in the programs, Students of Color, economically disadvantaged, first-generation and/or fostering experienced students in post-secondary education - Demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice coupled with strong interpersonal, communication, and management skills with the ability to work effectively within a diverse university setting - Shared similar lived experience as students served in the program |

This is a limited position, exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act. Limited appointees serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and are subject to Chapter UWS 15, Wisconsin Administrative Code, Wisconsin Statutes, Sections. 36.17, and UW System UPG #3.
