The assistant track and field sprints coach will have the responsibility of coaching, training and monitoring the performances of the sprints team for intercollegiate competitions.

• Assists the head coach by planning, critiquing and implementing strategies designed to achieve athletic success in a competitive track program.
• Develops student-athletes at the DII level by using effective coaching techniques to critique and improve the student -athletes’ skills and performance during sporting competition.
• Providing a safe environment for, and instructing student-athletes on, safety issues within the track and field arena.
• Preparation and   organization of daily practice schedules.
• In collaboration with the athletic training staff, design sport specific strength and conditioning program for optimal development of coordination, power, speed, agility.
• Enforces team discipline and policies by providing guidance and counsel to student-athletes.
• Cooperate with all coaches and administrative staff in order to enhance overall departmental operations.

• Maintains staff confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.

• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by coaching courses, professional publications.

• Operate motor pool vehicles to transport student athletes to competition.

COMPETENCIES

• Be flexible in coaching time due to class scheduling and be able to work effectively with athletes of all abilities.
• Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, providing sound coaching skills/techniques and mentorship towards academic success.

• Write the training and provide practice times around their other work schedules and their athletes.

• Be compliant with NCAA DII, Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), Title IX, and Saint Martin’s University rules and regulations.

• Keep clear and concise records of practice schedules, class schedules.

• Assist in the set up and direction of home cross country, and track and field meets.

• .Perform chaperone duties during meet trips.

• Demonstrate strong multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills needed to perform the tasks of promoting diversity and social justice.

• Knowledge of best practices related to supporting diverse student population, including students of color, students of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, first generation students, students with disabilities, and other historically marginalized identities. 

• Is supportive of a Catholic, Benedictine philosophy of education and able to articulate and support the University’s mission statement.

.   REQUIREMENTS AND/OR CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Bachelor’s degree.
• USATF Level 1 or equivalent.
• 3 years of prior experience of coaching required at the college/university level.
• Coaching experience in the hurdles, relays, jumps and sprinting events are preferred.
• Must successfully pass a background check.
• Must have a valid driver’s license. May be asked to pass a driving test (driving school vehicles), and to provide a driver’s abstract covering the past three years.
• Must pass NCAA D-II Rules Test.
• Must hold current American Red Cross CPR / First Aid certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment. Physical demands include: 

• Moves objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).
• Ability to be mobile campus wide for appropriate business needs. 
• Operates a variety of standard office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.
• Reading, writing, speaking, hearing, standing, bending, sitting.
• Learning and comprehending.

• Requires visual concentration on detail.

• Manual dexterity and precision required for keyboarding

• Must be able to sit for long periods at a time at a computer

• May occasionally be required to deal with distraught people.

• Must be able to concentrate on details and process complex information while experiencing frequent interruptions.

• Must be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels under stressful conditions. 

• Must maintain strict confidentiality relating to all issues in the department, Saint Martin’s University and the President’s Office.
