Assistant Track and Field Coach (12-month, Full-time)

Position Summary : Assist the Head Track and Field Coach in the fulfillment of his duties to train athletes, recruit athletes, maintain a first-class T&F facility, conduct quality home T&F competitions, maintain equipment and engage with the larger T&F community.

Qualifications : Requires bachelor’s degree. Previous College coaching experience preferred. Other requirements include: personal affirmation of the Christian mission of Westmont College and the Community Life Statement and adherence to its behavioral expectations, clear understanding of and ability to articulate the distinctives of a Christian Liberal Arts education; strong interpersonal and demonstrated organizational skills; solid administrative and tech skills. Requires a minimum of 1 year coaching experience. Requires some experience managing projects and performing financial analysis.  

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Instructs student athletes in how to maximize performance in their sport during practice and competition. This includes but is not limited to instruction through visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning methods both on the athletic field and in the classroom with study of technique, strategy, film, scouting reports, etc.
• Plan, organize and conduct training sessions for sprints, sprint relays, pole vault, and a) meeting/walk and talk check-in with members of training group once a semester and as needed (b) end of each semester note of encouragement to team members combined events on a weekly basis for fall and spring semesters
• Promote Westmont Track & Field with local and regional high schools (Santa Barbara, Ventura, SLO)
• Continuing education/certification in assigned coaching areas
• Present at Santa Barbara Athletic Roundtable for Track & Field
• Develops recruitment strategies and perform direct recruiting functions as approved by the Head Coach. Manage coordination of recruit visits with Admissions, recruit, parents, coaches including required ‘paperwork’ and athlete documents. IRL updates, Visit request from, Team host form.

  • Organize team entries before deadline
  • Operate finish line camera and wind readers for sprints and jump
  • Oversee pit rakes and LJ/TJ pit lasers (recruit/train 2 crews of 3)
  • Oversee field long throw lasers (recruit/train 2-3 laser operators
  • Oversee field events set-up and clean-up
  • Recruit USATF officials and volunteers for home events

• Away T&F meet organization:

  • Make team entries before entry deadline
  • Pack implements and assign athletes for transport
  • Organize tents, tarps, bungees, water jugs and athlete assignments for set-up and breakdown of team camp at the competition site.

• Equipment Maintenance:

  • Maintain ElliptiGO bikes in functional condition: tire pressure and repairs, chain lubrication, brakes
  • Always have two competition crossbars for HJ and PV available /// Pole Vault inventory
  • Complete Sauna inspection for heater function, clean towels, sanitary cleaning
  • Have 4-6 competition implements available for discus, shot put, javelin, hammer
  • Hurdle maintenance: hurdle heels, racks of 8 with cover, replace cracked boards
  • Complete landing pit inspections, monthly drying out, weather cover replacement and maintain takeoff boards

• Facility Maintenance

  • Supervise student workers, assign jobs, inspect work, submit time cards.
  • Weed abatement on outside of track, field edging, SP landing areas, tree trimming
  • Blow sand off the track around LJ pits after each workout session
  • Blow off full track surface weekly on Monday.
  • Trash cans emptied weekly around the facility and in the office/shed
  • Maintain order and cleanliness of track shed office.
  • Organize and maintain order in track shed, tool shed and PV shed
  • Maintain exterior track drainage to avoid mud across the track surface

• CARA logs for weekly practice and competitions. Complete weekly CARA report on ARMS.

  • Weekly staff planning meeting with the head coach
  • Advertise, organize and conduct the Jim Klein Decathlon and Barbara Nwaba Heptathlon
  • Host overnight recruiting visit in November and January
  • Host a summer Prospect Camp on campus with information available by April 1
  • Conduct summer Westmont Kids T&F camp
  • Host two summer All-Comer T&F meets for youth to Masters
  • Use RAMP card for purchases and reconcile receipts within 24 hours of posting.
  • Assists with other tasks as needed by head coach.
  • Must comply with and stay educated on all Pac-West and NCAA rules. The violation of NCAA rules is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

• Other duties as assigned.
