Position Highlights

The Assistant Coach for Women’s Wheelchair Basketball supports the head coach in the coordination and delivery of a competitive adaptive athletics program. This role assists with practice implementation, student-athlete development, and day-to-day team operations while contributing to a positive and inclusive student experience.

The position requires regular travel with the team and includes responsibility for transporting student-athletes and equipment to practices, competitions, and events. Work is performed under the direction of the head coach and Director, Adaptive Athletics and follows established program and departmental guidelines.

This position will require 15-19 hours a week and travel exceptions may occur for additional hours.

Duties & Responsibilities

Coaching & Student-Athlete Support

• Assist the head coach with the implementation of practice plans, drills, and skill development activities.
• Provide feedback and guidance to student-athletes during practices and competitions.
• Support athlete development, conditioning activities, and overall team performance.
• Monitor athlete progress and communicate observations to the head coach.
• Develop positive working relationships with student-athletes to support engagement and retention.

Team Operations, Travel & Program Support

• Serve as a driver for team travel, operating university vehicles to transport student-athletes and equipment to practices, competitions, and events.
• Travel regularly with the team, including evenings, weekends, and overnight trips as required.
• Ensure all driving responsibilities are performed in full compliance with the University Fleet Safety Policy.
• Assist with maintaining team records, statistics, and video/film coordination.
• Support recruitment efforts for prospective student-athletes.
• Assist with setup and operations of home games, tournaments, and special events.
• Help maintain, organize, and transport adaptive athletic equipment.
• Provide general program and event support for adaptive athletics and campus recreation as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of basketball principles, strategies, and rules.
• Ability to assist with coaching and development of student-athletes.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with a multifaceted population, including individuals with disabilities.
• Ability to follow established policies, procedures, and direction from supervisors.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability ang willingness to travel regularly with the team and serve as a designated driver for student-athletes and program-related travel.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
• 1 year of relevant work experience required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of previous coaching experience, preferably in wheelchair basketball.
• Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
• Demonstrated experience supporting student-athlete development.
