Job Description Summary

Direct and Administer the Drumline, Front Ensemble, and Back Ensemble of the Liberty University Marching Band. Direct and Administer the Liberty University Spirit Band. Direct and Administer the Liberty University Indoor Drumline.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Marching Band Responsibilities
  • Assist Director of Bands with supervising and managing each Marching Band performance, local and travel
  • Assist Director of Bands with managing Marching Band auditions
  • Administer percussion camp and supervise percussion leadership responsibilities related to Marching Band camp
  • Assist Director of Bands with designing Marching Band fall pre-game and half-time shows
  • Manage percussion composition needs for Marching Band (compose marching band drum book, compose exercises/cadences/stands shorts)
  • Manage all percussion performance elements for football half-time shows, parades, and special events
  • Assist Director of Bands with coordinating all Marching Band rehearsals including but not limited to: band camp rehearsals, battery sectionals, game-day rehearsals throughout season
  • Administer acquisition of new percussion instruments, sticks, hardware
  • Administer recruitment of percussion Marching Band members
  • Participate in all band social functions including but not limited to Parents’ Day, etc.
• Spirit Band Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage each Spirit Band performance, local and travel
  • Administer all Spirit Band rehearsals
  • Administer Spirit Band auditions
  • Manage the selection of new repertoire for Spirit Band
  • Administer recruitement of Spirit Band members
• LU Indoor Drumline
  • Supervise and manage each LU Indoor Drum Line performance, local and travel
  • Administer all LU Indoor Drumline rehearsals
  • Administer LU Indoor Drumline auditions
  • Manage the selection of new repertoire for LU Indoor Drum Line
  • Manage all creative elements of LU Indoor Drum Line performances
  • Manage LU Indoor Drum Line student and contract staff
  • Administer recruitment of LU Indoor Drumline members
• Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
• Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions for Christ.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for 12 student/contract staff.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

Four-year college degree with demonstrated proficiency in drumline and marching band directing. Detail oriented with strong, well-developed communications skills and ability to work independently.

ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JOB

Communication and Comprehension

• Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well articulated information.
• Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
• Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Computer skills

Problem-Solving

• Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.

Physical and Sensory Abilities

• May be required to travel on campus and locally for various events.
• May be required to sit to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
• Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
• Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
• Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
• Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled setting. It is well lighted, and the noise level is moderate. Working environment may include facilitation of events outdoors occasionally. (Edit for duties performed outside office environment.)

Driving Requirements

Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
