Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Athletics Communications will be responsible for supplying communications services for designated teams while promoting the Athletics Department, the Drake Relays, and individual student-athletes and coaches. This is a full-time position responsible for operating alongside the Director of Athletics Communications and the general athletic administration with the day-to-day activity of the Athletic Department’s Communications Team.
All of this position's job duties require an understanding of and compliance with the rules of the NCAA, the Missouri Valley Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Pioneer Football League and/or the Summit League and Drake University.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, sport management, or other relevant field from an accredited institution.
• Two years of experience in publications, journalism, public relations, or other relevant areas.
• One year of experience working in collegiate or professional sports.
• Advanced writing skills.
• Understanding and experience using major social media platforms.
• Willingness and ability to be active and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Competency with software like NCAA Live Stats, PrestoSports, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and other Adobe Creative Suite applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
• Master’s degree in communications, communications, marketing, sport management, or other relevant field from an accredited institution.
Core Job Duties:
Responsible for all communications related activities for designated sports, including but not limited to the following:
20% Written pregame and postgame stories.
20% General management of individual team social media accounts in collaboration with coaching staffs, team managers, and athletes.
20% Statistical entry and analysis.
10% Creation and distribution of box scores, game programs, game notes, and other necessary documents.
10% Functioning individually and as a member of the external operations team to provide high-quality content creation and distribution for various Drake Athletics social media channels.
5% Organization of press conferences and media availabilities for coaches, athletes, and administrators.
5% Collaborate with external staff to pitch special interest stories to local, regional, and national outlets to engage fans in support of our coaches, student-athletes, and alumni.
5% Communicate with photographers, videographers, and graphic designers to assist in content creation process effectively and appropriately. Assist in recruitment, hiring, and oversight of a small staff of student-workers.
5% Update and organize various teams’ record books and archives. Perform other duties, as assigned. - (Essential)
