Position Overview:

The Menlo College Athletics Department seeks applications for the position of Assistant Director for Club Sports, Intramural, and Recreation. This is a full-time, 11-month, exempt position that reports to the Vice President and Director of Athletics. The description of responsibilities below is intended to be descriptive but not necessarily all- inclusive.

The Assistant Director of Athletics for Club Sports, Intramural, and Recreation is a member of the Department of Athletics’ administrative team and is responsible for leading the development and administration of Menlo College’s recreational sports and programs, including Club Sports, Intramural Sports, and Recreational Activities. These activities are intended to provide appropriate individual/team programs and services that help promote student growth and development, positive interpersonal relationships, development of leadership skills, and learning healthy lifestyles. This position requires equal-opportunity programming for all students. Faculty and staff participation is also encouraged.

The Assistant Director of Athletics for Club Sports, Intramural, and Recreation’s primary responsibilities include program planning, development, and management; supervision and training of student and professional staff; development and oversight of operating budgets; risk management assessment; and development and monitoring of program policies and procedures.

 

Responsibilities:

The following is intended to be a descriptive but not necessarily all-inclusive list of responsibilities.

• Hire and manage all Head Coaches for club sports teams.
• Ensure all Head Coaches manage budgets, rosters, and rules and regulations associated with their governing bodies.
• Hire and manage all Athletic Training Staff for the club sports program.
• Develop a strategic plan for Club Sports, Intramurals, and Recreation.
• Engage staff and faculty for club advisor positions.
• Recruit, supervise, train, and develop student staff and necessary job descriptions.
• Manage payroll for all student workers.
• Organize and effectively store, maintain, and order Club Sports, Intramurals, and Recreation equipment.
• Work with other departments and student groups on campus to foster an active and highly engaged student body via Club Sports, Intramurals, and Recreation.
• Verify and monitor health clearance and participant waivers for all Club Sports, Intramurals, and Recreation students.
• Effectively manage and monitor Club Sports, Intramurals, and Recreation budgets.
• Work collaboratively with necessary Athletics administrators to develop a department-wide strategic plan.
• Develop a recruiting plan and coordinate with the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid to ensure complete and competitive rosters.

 

Club Sports Responsibilities:

• Create and administer club sports programs.
• Advise Athletic Director regarding student needs for campus-wide club sports program.
• Provide oversight of rosters, facility scheduling for practice and competitions, travel plans, and budget requests.
• Review and enforce compliance with safety, risk, injury, and travel procedures for club teams.
• Create, maintain, and implement Club Sports Policies as outlined in the policies and procedures handbook.
• Establish guidelines for coaches, volunteers, and other team personnel.
• Assist club leadership with budgeting, including fundraising strategies and inventory management.
• Market the Club Sports program, including scheduled competitions and special events.
• Coordinate Athletic Training and medical coverage for the Club Sports Program.

 

Intramural Sports Responsibilities:

• Administer all aspects of the Intramural Sports program.
• Through regular visitations, monitor and evaluate all intramural events and staff during regular intramural contest hours (including evenings and weekends).
• Monitor the safety of programs, equipment, and facilities.
• Create, maintain, and enforce Intramural Sports Policies as outlined in the policies and procedures handbook.
• Market the Intramural Sports program to students, faculty, and staff.
• Manage the Intramural Sports budget.

 

Recreation Responsibilities:

• Supervise and develop recreation and adventure clubs, including but not limited to a running club, ski/snowboard club, and outdoor club.
• Create, maintain, and enforce Recreation Policies as outlined in the policies and procedures handbook.

Accountability

Accountable for assisting in the overall management of the Athletics Department, including administrative duties, specifically the mission, vision, goals and objectives. Accountable to assist the management team within the department. The Assistant Director of Athletics for Club Sports, Intramural and Recreation must abide by all applicable NCAA, athletic conference (PacWest), and Menlo College Athletics Department rules and regulations.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred in related field.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills as well as written and oral communication skills.
• A minimum of two years’ experience in the collegiate environment including, but not limited to involvement with student development and supervision.
• Knowledge and experience in the organization for Campus Recreation programming is preferred.
• Demonstrated experience overseeing the day-to-day administrative and operational functions of an athletics department.
• Substantial budgetary experience is requested, and experienced fund-raising is preferred.
• A dedication to the success of student-athletes in their academic and athletic endeavors, and a commitment to integrity, general equity, and diversity.
• Demonstrated experience to supervise, direct, and manage others effectively.
• Ability to work with other professionals across campus.
• Ability to work non-traditional schedules, including nights and weekends.

Evaluation Criteria

• Evidence of strong student involvement in planning, organizing, and officiating.
• Diversity of program offerings.
• Diversity of student participants (including diversity of ability).
• Display of the highest levels of sportsmanship, fair play, and good conduct by all participants.
• Effective operational and budgetary program management.
• Annually increasing rates of student participation working jointly with the Vice President and Director of Athletics to develop annual goals to assess the success of student engagement.
