Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of physical programming for men’s and women’s basketball, and other teams as assigned. Additional responsibilities with the basketball teams include travel, participation in practice as needed, and extended work with return to play cases. In addition, the position will assist the Director of Strength and Conditioning with department management and staff leadership. A specific focus of this position will be in Applied Sports Science, working collaboratively with the Sports Performance team to create sustainable processes that systematically measure, analyze, evaluate, and modify training in order to maximize results.

Responsibilities also include being a contributing team member of the Sports Performance Department. Our goal is to positively impact Penn student-athletes and help them reach their highest potential physically and mentally, reduce risk of injury, and create an unrivaled experience. All staff members will contribute to this goal by educating, inspiring, empowering, and growing their respective student-athletes and teams.

The position requires both an advanced degree of related knowledge and experience, plus the range to think creatively and act collaboratively. Job Description

Job Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and evaluate holistic training programs that meets the needs of the sport coach, team, and individual. Create and maintain a positive environment that leads to an engaging experience. Instruct the team, group, or individual student-athletes in the optimal execution of strength and conditioning activities aiming to obtain desired results. Select and utilize Key Performance Indicators that help assess, monitor, guide, and motivate training. Fully utilize all provided technology systems, including TeamBuildr, Perch, and Smartabase.
• Work in concert with the Director of Strength and Conditioning to continuously evolve the strength and conditioning vision and core values, weight room culture, and staff professional development. Perform other related administrative duties as assigned by the Director of Strength and Conditioning.
• Lead the Applied Sports Science program. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring a reliable, valid, and consistent collection of data throughout our department, overseeing the data analysis, and assisting in determining the best practices for applying the knowledge gained. Collaboration with multiple campus partners and members of the athletic department, including sport coaches, will be integral. Direct oversight of a dedicated Work Study student assistant.
• Work in concert with other members of Strength and Conditioning staff to implement and enforce policies and procedures governing the use of the weight room, ensuring the health and safety of all student-athletes. Share in the responsibilities of coverage and care of weight room facilities. Help with additional team coverage when needed.
• Create and maintain positive relationships with all campus partners. Communicate and collaborate regularly with Sports Performance staff, sports medicine, sport coaches, and student-athletes, to ensure that the most beneficial results of the strength and conditioning program are being realized.
• Continually develop professionally, alongside other Sports Performance team members.
• Occasionally work odd hours (early mornings, evenings, weekends) and travel.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Masters preferred. Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA) and/or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (CSCCa) required. Experience in data collection, analysis, and data supported decision making is required. 3+ years of experience in a collegiate setting is preferred. 1+ years of experience with basketball is preferred. Experience using TeamBuildr, Perch, and Smartabase (or similar AMS system) is preferred.
