Position Summary:
The Assistant Football Coach – Defensive Coordinator provides leadership and oversight for the defensive unit, including developing and implementing defensive schemes, coordinating game plans, leading defensive staff and position coaches, and making in-game adjustments to ensure competitive success. This position mentors student-athletes, supports their academic and personal development, and manages defensive recruiting strategy and evaluation. The Defensive Coordinator works closely with the Head Coach and program staff to support compliance, administration, and the overall mission and values of Campbell Football. This is a full time, 12 month position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide strategic leadership and oversight for the entire defensive unit, including scheme development, game planning, practice installation, and in-game adjustments
Serve as the primary architect of the defensive philosophy and identity, ensuring alignment with the head coach’s vision while managing all position coaches on the defensive side
Responsible for analyzing opponent offensive tendencies and developing weekly defensive game plans that directly influence competitive outcomes
Coordinate all defensive staff, leading unit meetings, organizing practice schedules, and ensuring proper teaching progression, communication, and execution across all position groups
Handle critical in-game decision-making, including personnel packages, situational play-calling, and real-time adjustments
Oversee defensive recruiting priorities, identifying needs by position, evaluating talent, and coordinating defensive recruiting efforts to maintain and elevate roster quality
Act as a key member of the program’s leadership team, contributing to program-wide strategy, culture, and student-athlete development
Provide on the field coaching and instruction to student-athletes
Adhere to all university, CAA, and NCAA regulations
Help monitor the academic progress of student-athletes
Communicate and at times, work closely with other departments on campus such as academic advising, residence life, admissions, sports information, campus recreation, compliance, athletic training, and strength and conditioning
Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times

Exemplify the goals, values, and objectives of the program, in the performance of all duties
Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to; Title IX, and Information Security, including, but not limited to FERPA and other state and federal guidelines
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree desired
At least 2 years of college defensive coaching experience with proven recruiting at the NCAA Division I level desired
Experience competing as a NCAA Division I Football athlete desired
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with student athletes, and others, through both oral and written channels
Strong organizational and administrative skills are required
Ability to teach the game of Football at a high level and within a university setting
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and attention to detail are essential
Familiarity with Microsoft Applications, standard methods of digital communication, and common social media platforms
Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with student athletes, parents, administrative staff, opposing coaches and players, game officials, and the public
Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people
Exercise independent judgment in complex and new situations
Manage multiple, concurrent projects, and meet strict deadlines
Adaptability, flexibility and a willingness to work in a changing environment.
Ability to work regular evening or weekend hours; and travel, including overnight stays
