Assistant Football Coach/Defensive Coordinator

Pay Status and Classification: Exempt, Regular full-time.

Supervisor: Head Football Coach

Position Purpose: Responsible for assisting in the organization, development, and leadership of a highly competitive Division III football program in support of the mission and core values of Union College. The position will include a secondary responsibility assigned by the Director of Athletics.

The football program is a member of NCAA Division III and the Liberty League. Union College sponsors 26 intercollegiate sports, 24 in Division III, with Ice Hockey competing at Division I.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Recruitment: Assists in recruiting and retaining top prospective student athletes who are fully engaged in the mission of Union College. Collaborates with the head coach and admissions department to arrange on-campus visits for all prospective student-athletes and their families. Ensures compliance with all recruitment policies and procedures.
2. Coaching: Demonstrates effective teaching methods and possesses excellent leadership. Designs coaching strategies for the offense. Collaborates with the athletics trainer to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all participants.
3. Student-Athlete Development: Assists in ensuring the academic success of student-athletes by collaborating with college stakeholders. Mentors student-athletes.
4. Administration: Assists in aspects designated by the head coach of the football program adhering to NCAA, league, and department compliance. Pitches in to assist colleagues as needed.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of successful coaching experience and/or a combination of relevant education, training, certifications, and/or work experience. Master’s degree and defensive line coaching and defensive coordinator experience preferred.
2. Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
3. Ability to lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.), and stand, bend and stoop for extended periods of time.
4. Must possess or obtain a valid New York State driver’s license.
5. Thorough understanding and working knowledge of federal, state, local, and NCAA, rules, policies and procedures.
6. Strong oral and written communication skills, including attention to detail.
7. Effective computer skills for recruiting and game analysis software.
8. Able to work in a fast-paced environment and be self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
9. Able to exercise exceptional judgment, ensure strict confidentiality, and demonstrate outstanding professionalism in a range of situations.
10. Able to support, contribute to, and strengthen a vibrant, culturally diverse, and inclusive learning community of students, alumni, faculty, and fellow professionals.

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is $65,000.00 - $75,000.00. Except for roles with a set rate of pay, the wage/salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The stated hiring rate/range represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
