Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Head Coach, the Coordinator serves as the leader of specific, functional area(s). They plan and direct all aspects of the functional area(s) in alignment with the Head Coach’s goals, vision, and strategic direction.

The purpose of this position is to use athletics as a tool to educate college students. By using inter-collegiate competition and all activities related to such competition, this position serves as a teacher and mentor to help build student character, prepare students for a constructive and effective life, and teach valuable life lessons including work ethic; discipline; resilience; persistence; teamwork and selflessness; goal-setting and goal achievement; overcoming adversity; and leadership. This position typically influences student-athletes for their entire four years at Harvard and plays a key role in shaping their personal development.

The Coordinator is second in line behind the Head Coach in the coaching hierarchy. This position oversees the Special Teams unit and Wide Receivers.

This is a one-year term position with an end date on January 31, 2025, renewable at the discretion of the Head Coach and the Athletics Director.

Position Description

1.** Athlete Team Management**

• For functional area, plans and directs practices and in-game coaching to strategically develop student-athlete skills; responsible for impact of functional area on team performance.
• For functional area, scouts opponents and develops strategies including through extensive video analysis.
• Supports culture of education through athletics; ensures student-athletes assigned to functional area receive meaningful direction and support from coaching staff.
• Assists in developing and executing student-athlete recruitment and retention strategy for functional area that aligns with values of excellence and inclusion; responsible for strategy’s impact on team performance.
• Credibly and effectively leads and communicates with student athletes. Mentors student athletes in embracing leadership roles.
• Assists in academic integration with team.

2.** Operational Complexity**

• Assists in the development and execution of team strategy, logistics and operational direction for specific team function.
• Operates within budget.
• Maintains compliance with University, Ivy League, NCAA and other rules and regulations.
• Leads and directs less-experienced position coaches in implementing objectives.
• Participates in professional development activities; identifies trends and innovation opportunities.
• Assists head coach in identifying and resolving problems, which may be of a complex nature and may require intricate solutions that impact the team.
• Communicates effectively with the Head Coach and athletics administrators.

3.** Communication & Influence**

• Assists Head Coach in maintaining and cultivating positive media interest.
• May assist Head Coach in preparation for media interviews.
• Requires the ability to influence positively public interest where applicable.

Harvard University, an FCS Division 1 Institution, is currently looking to hire a Special Teams Coordinator/Wide Receivers Coach. This Coordinator will work closely with the head coach and staff, with primary responsibilities focusing on instructing special teams players and wide receivers.

In addition, the Coordinator will:

• Help instruct and develop student athletes.
• Assist in making strategic decisions in contest situations.
• Support the strength and conditioning of the athletes.
• Be responsible for recruiting for a specific geographic area.
• Handle administrative responsibilities associated with the program operations.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• Requires at least 5 years of football coaching experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

• Requires substantial mastery of sport-specific and team function-specific knowledge, as well as knowledge of relevant issues.
• Understands and embraces the philosophy, principles and policies of college athletics (including the University Conflict of Interest and Commitment policy).
• Requires advanced management and leadership knowledge.

Certificates and Licenses

• Valid driver's license needed.
• CPR and First Aid required.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift equipment associated with the sport.

Working Conditions

• Evening and weekend work required.
• Job requires work in extreme environmental conditions, including extreme heat and cold, rain, and high levels of noise.

This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable).
