Job Description

The Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development and Leadership will be responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive program to address the following components of the student-athlete population: academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, and career development. This will include but not be limited to, establishing a holistic approach to the leadership development of all student-athletes, from the recruiting stage through graduation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and coordinate a comprehensive, holistic student-athlete development and life skills program for all Seton Hall student athletes. This includes strategic enhancement of the student-athlete experience within the pillars of the H.A.L.L. Program (Helping Athletes Learn to be Leaders): leadership development, community enrichment, career development, student-athlete welfare enhancement, and spiritual growth. This is inclusive of developing leadership programs to address the needs of all student athletes at the various stages of their academic and athletic careers and utilizing on and off campus resources for a leadership workshop series. The Assistant Athletic Director will also create needs-assessment tools for coaches, students and support staff to identify appropriate life skills programming for athletic teams as well as develop a comprehensive/cohesive, 12-month programming calendar the goal of which is to foster the career development of student athletes by way of a strong relationship with the Career Center. In addition, these duties are to include:
    • Assist student-athletes with career planning, internships, and job search strategies.
    • Organize and maintain a resume database for all student athletes,
    • Assist with the development and implementation of all programming designed to support student-athletes in the areas of leadership training, community service and character development.
    • Encourage students to utilize University and Academic Support for Student Athletes resources such as tutoring, career services, student activities, and other academic services to achieve academic success.
    • Regularly communicate student-athlete progress and performance to coaches, administrators, faculty, and staff.
    • Collaborate with units in the Division of Student Affairs as the athletics representative focusing on campus resources, helping student-athletes adjust to campus life, and integrating them with the student body.
    • Serve as a department representative and liaison to various campus and BIG EAST Conference constituents including partnership and committee work related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  2. Develop a formal nomination process for all institutional, regional, and national athletic and academic awards. Facilitate students and staff with the completion of award applications. Work closely with the university Fellowship Advisor to identify and cultivate student-athletes as nominee for prestigious fellowships/scholarships, such as Fulbright and Rhodes scholarships.
  3. Manage all athletic departmental community efforts in collaboration with the athletics marketing staff inclusive of student athlete community service activities and Pirate Mascot community relations appearances. In addition, the coordinator will manage community service efforts both with and in addition to the Division of Volunteer Efforts and coordinating special events for coaches and athletic staff throughout the year that promote professional growth and development. Ensure that all community outreach and events comply with NCAA rules and regulations.
  4. Serve as a co-advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) through monthly meetings and provide support to SAAC activities as well as serve as a liaison with university committees as identified.
  5. The Assistant Athletic Director with work in collaboration with the department of athletics senior staff with respect to:
    • The planning of the annual SAAC award banquet (SHUcademy Awards).
