Job Description Summary:
Under the direction of Deputy Director of Athletics, the Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight of the Sports Medicine, Mental Health & Performance, and Conditioning (Sports Performance) units within the Department of Athletics as the Health Care Administrator, a position required by the NCAA.
The individual in this role is responsible for fostering an organizational culture centered on excellence, trust, collaboration, and professional growth among staff, while ensuring the highest standards of health care, safety, and wellness for all student-athletes. The position oversees all aspects of medical operations, including budget management, insurance coordination, personnel supervision, compliance, and facility administration. The incumbent ensures adherence to NCAA, conference, state, and national regulations and serves as the primary liaison for health and safety matters with both internal and external partners & service providers. As the clinical lead of the department’s multi-disciplinary student-athlete well-being team, the position provides leadership and coordination across sports medicine, student-athlete nutrition, sport performance (strength & conditioning), and sport psychology, ensuring an integrated approach to student-athlete well-being. The individual will develop, implement, and monitor best-practice policies and procedures that promote optimal standards of care, safety, and performance. This role requires a dynamic leader with a demonstrated commitment to professional development, ethical practice, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will be expected to model institutional values, promote teamwork and shared accountability, and maintain a comprehensive and compliant health and safety infrastructure that supports the mission and vision of the athletics department.
Job Description:
Minimum Requirements:
Master’s degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
Current national certification from the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC).
Current CPR certification by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
Experience with direct oversight of 5–20 staff (trainers, performance, psychology).
Significant experience in the sports medicine field.
Preferred Requirements:
Experience as supervisor of a collegiate sports medicine unit.
Proven experience with staff development and implementation of new processes.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Demonstration of autonomous and compliant experience working with Division I collegiate athletics.
Experience in creating and implementing Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for medical services.
Strong leadership and management skills in building a positive and empowering work environment.
Documented knowledge and experience managing insurance and liability claims. Demonstrated knowledge and applied experience understanding and prioritizing mental health.
Work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse campus community.
Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment; be solution-oriented and perform in stressful circumstances while communicating effectively.
Conditions of Employment:
On-call responsibility nightly and on weekends for emergencies that are triaged by the athletic trainers.
This is a restricted position, subject to the continued availability of funding.
