The Associate Athletics Director for Academic Excellence will be responsible for the organization, administration, evaluation, and supervision of a comprehensive academic support, learning resources, and degree completion program for 650 student-athletes in 22 sports. In addition, the position will serve on the ICA Senior Leadership team.
The Associate Athletics Director for Academic Excellence will be required to uphold the integrity of the University of Washington, the NCAA, and the conference in all matters pertaining to the academic and developmental services offered to student-athletes.
This position is expected to collaborate with the Faculty Athletics Representative and work with other university departments/units to integrate services offered to student-athletes. This person must manage the operating budget and respond to the needs of the coaches and other departmental personnel relative to student-athlete academic support, recruiting, and Conference and NCAA academic eligibility requirements. It is expected that this individual will use their knowledge and expertise to build a model student-athlete academic success program for the ICA. This position will serve as a member of the ICA Leadership Team and will have a dual reporting line to the Deput Athletics Director – Student Services/SWA and the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.
Specific Responsibilities –
Executive Leadership of Academic Support Program (SAAS):
Create a vision and direction that will guide the delivery of student academic and learning services with the full commitment from staff, coaches, and students. Ensure student-athlete academic progress, retention, and timely graduation.
Hire, lead, and evaluate 14 full-time academic staff, 50-60 part-time tutors, and part-time student assistants.
Prepare and monitor the annual operating budget of approximately $2 million.
Create, execute, and maintain a strategic plan for both the SAAS program and subunits.
Ensure that each student-athlete is provided with academic advising consistent with the requirements for NCAA academic eligibility requirements. Maintain accurate academic records for each student-athlete and team in accordance with university policies. Ensure that academic services (tutoring, study table, learning resources) are available for all student-athletes.
Work with each head coach to ensure that specific academic policies and goals are established for each team. Communicate (directly or through staff) with coaches in a timely manner with respect to academic and other issues involving members of their respective team.
Serve as the primary departmental liaison with other campus units, including the faculty, for various academic and student service functions. Attend and report regularly to the Advisory Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics (ACIA) as requested.
Track and identify improvement plans for Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) scores.
Execute study abroad, international service trips, and foreign tour academic components for student-athletes and teams.
Organize and track Finish Line Degree Completion program including selection, budgeting, advising, and financial aid distribution.
Ensure that the Ackerley Academic Center, the Graves Annex, and computer facilities are well-maintained and conducive to academic activities.
Develop and execute summer (LEAP) and mid-year academic programs for new admits.
Create, train, and oversee academic services staff involvement and recruiting presentations for all sports. Assist with recruiting and admission related functions as needed.
Report annually to UW Board of Regents and other faculty committees as requested.
Serve as representative to the Big Ten Academic Directors board and other committees as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned by the Deputy AD – Student Services/SWA and Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.
Senior Leadership Responsibilities:
Serve as a member of the ICA Senior Leadership team responsible for all operations, budget, and administration of ICA. Work with other senior administrators to advise, develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and communication plans, including yearly and long-term strategic plans.
Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Conference, the State of Washington, and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Minimum Requirements:
Master’s degree required, preferably in Education, Student Personnel or Sports Administration/ Leadership and a minimum of five years of experience in working in or leading an academic support program or student-athlete development program (e.g., as career services, leadership development, and community outreach programs) for student-athletes. Professional experience at a Division I university.
Additionally
Demonstrated commitment to the values of excellence, integrity, and student growth. Experience in the leadership of a complex department/unit including the supervision of a diverse staff and budget management. Experience in academic and student affairs, especially in student success programs such (e.g., academic advising, tutoring, and learning styles. Experience directing programs for and working with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. Knowledge of NCAA initial eligibility requirements, progress towards degree requirements and the NCAA Academic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate requirements.
Experience managing a budget and a complex unit of staff. Experience working with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and customers. Ability to represent the department professionally with the media, in public speaking, and in oral and written communications. Demonstrated commitment to the values of excellence, integrity, and student growth.
Frequent evening and weekend work and events are required.
