Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications
Long Island University (LIU), an NCAA DI institution, is seeking an Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications. The Associate Athletic Director is a member of the LIU Athletics executive team and provides oversight of all communications, media relations and training, broadcasting, publications, sports information, social media, public relations, and various external operations areas as assigned by the Director of Athletics. This position works closely with university staff and is responsible for maintaining contact with all internal and external stakeholders. Reporting to the Director of Athletics, this position provides oversight of LIU Athletics Communications staff, maintains an active role in the assignment of gameday duties, and serves as liaison to university staff for the purposes of public relations, This position is based on the Long Island University Post campus, but requires oversight, and an active presence, of communications, broadcast, media relations, and sports information operations for all sports programs at both the Post and Brooklyn campuses.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversees and ensures all processes, procedures, and systems necessary to direct the Athletic Department and assign communications and media relations for 38 varsity sport programs. Oversees all communications, media relations and training, broadcasting, publications, sports information, social media, public relations, and various external operations areas as assigned by the Director of Athletics and is expected to successfully manage, train, and develop a team of direct reports to ensure coverage for all 38 varsity programs. Develop and implement media training to ensure that staff and student-athletes are aware of best practices related to media requests and publicity. Collaborate with departmental, conference, and association staff to develop an annual calendar of anticipate media activity and develop communications strategies for all 38 sport programs. Develop, and execute strategies, for maintaining student participation records in collaboration with departmental administrators.
Professional Experience/Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, marketing, or a related degree. A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in college athletics, professional sports, or at a PR agency, or other communications division in the education or the private sector. A minimum of 5 years of direct team supervision – football and/or men’s basketball preferred. A proven track record of managing multiple programs and execution from concept through implementation and measurement. Self-motivated and able to multitask/manage multiple priorities. Broad knowledge of current events, industry, and business news. Ability to work independently. Experience with managing budgets. Ability to work non-traditional hours, including game nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Education:
A bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, marketing, or a related degree. Master's degree preferred.
Work Schedule:
Requires the ability to work occasional nights, weekends, and some holidays.
