Summary:
Reporting to the Athletic Director, the Associate Athletic Trainer provides athletic training services to all athletic teams and their student-athletes with the proactive goal of preventing athletic-related injuries and illnesses.
Job Description:
Evaluates and treats athletic injuries; provides injury-related counseling and education to all student-athletes.
Assumes the responsibility for athletic training administrative tasks such as tracking inventory, filing insurance claims, making medical referrals; and assists with the coordination and scheduling of medical coverage during home and away competitions.
Supervises intern student athletic trainers and student workers; maintains thorough record-keeping and documentation on a timely manner; works closely with physicians and other allied health care professionals providing care to student-athletes; and participates in home competitions and travels to away competitions as scheduled.
Provides athletic trainer services to MSSD’s athletics teams and their student-athletes; and educates student-athletes on how to prevent or reduce the possibility of athletic-related injuries and illnesses.
Conducts on-site evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries.
Provides counseling and education to all student-athletes.
Assumes the responsibility for athletic training administrative tasks such as tracking inventory, filing insurance claims, making medical referrals, or any other administrative tasks as assigned by the head athletic trainer.
Assists with the coordination and scheduling for medical coverage for all home and away competitions; participates in home and away competitions as scheduled; and travels with the team for away competitions.
Supervises intern athletic trainer students and student workers and contributes to their learning about the athletic trainer position, roles, and responsibilities.
Maintains thorough record-keeping and documentation on all athletic trainer activities in a timely manner; and maintains confidentiality of all records.
Works closely with physicians and other allied health care professionals providing care to student-athletes.
Maintains current ATC (Athletic Trainer, Certified) certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer and participates in ongoing continuing education requirements in order to maintain certification; maintains professional membership with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association; maintains current certification in American Red Cross or American Heart Associations’ Basic Life Support (BLS), Professional Rescuer, or above certifications; and participates in professional development as appropriate.
Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor.
Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree.
ATC (Certified Athletic Trainer) Certification from the Board of Certification (BOC).
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree.
Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
Certification in American Red Cross, American Heart Associations’ Basic Life Support (BLS), Professional Rescuer, or a relevant organization.

Strong knowledge about a large range of medical problems.
Strong assessment and evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals.
Strong ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return to play decisions.

Additional Job Details:
This is a 11-month contract per year position.
If the successful candidate has over one year of required professional experience and exceeds the qualifications, they may be hired as “Athletic Trainer.”
This position is expected to report to work on campus. However, there may be opportunities for a modified work schedule or other flexible working arrangements based on performance and the needs of the department or the University.
The incumbent must be able to work in outdoor conditions.
The incumbent must travel with teams during the week, weekend, and holidays as well as work with teams and their student-athletes during early morning and evening/late evening hours.
If the incumbent has no knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is required to achieve an ASLPI score of 1.5 within two years of employment. If the incumbent is hired with some knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is required to achieve an ASLPI score of 2 within two years of employment. The supervisor must ensure that the incumbent receives the necessary support to meet this goal.
