Position Summary:
The Assistant Director for Student Athlete Academic Success assists the Director of SAASC in coordinating the vision, programs, and services provided by the Student Athlete Academic Success Center. In support of student athlete success at UNC, the Assistant Director ensures that UNC is adhering to the academic regulations set by the campus, Big Sky Conference, and the NCAA. This position reports to the Director of the Student Athlete Academic Success Center and is responsible for the day-to-day functions of the SAASC, including assessing the operations in support of continuous improvement.
Job Duties:
Primary functions of the Assistant Director of the SAASC:
Assist the director with the overall vision and operations of the SAASC.
Assess programs and services and create and implement intensive intervention models that facilitate student success.
Provide leadership, academic support, and advisement strategies for their assigned student population.
Serve as a resource to students, faculty, and staff regarding the day-to-day functions of the SAASC.
Monitor, track, and advise as needed to ensure assigned student athlete population is meeting all NCAA eligibility requirements and institutional academic requirements.
Intensive monitoring and assessment of academic programs available for student athletes. The intent is to develop individual learners to perform at a high level during their collegiate experience. The Assistant Director is an advisor who will act as a case manager for these students and monitor their academic performance at UNC and ensure that they are properly progressing towards graduation and maintaining their NCAA and Big Sky eligibility by continually monitoring the NCAA benchmarks (PTD, PTDT, and all PTD requirements set by Bylaw 14.4).

Assist the Director with overall guidance and maintenance of the day-to-day operations of the Student Athlete Academic Success Center. The Assistant Director will have direct operational responsibilities in regard to the operations of the Center. These responsibilities include but are not limited to: Eligibility tracking and projections, creation of essential documents and assessment strategies, software enhancements, etc.

Assist in the advisement and registration process with assigned population. All changes to the student- athletes schedule need to be checked and approved by the athletic academic advisor before they can be processed. All schedules and schedule changes agreed upon by the student athlete and their major advisor will be checked by the athletic advisor to verify they are on proper degree progress and will maintain full NCAA athletic eligibility; as well as allow them to properly participate in their class schedule around scheduled practices and additional workout/team expectations.

Meet frequently with academic support staff and coaches to discuss student athlete performance and evaluation. Discuss the academic performance of current student athletes and provide success strategies for students who are at-risk of low performance in their classes. Take part in the onboarding process for incoming transfer student athletes and communicate with coaches as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Higher Education, Special Education, Psychology, Exercise Science, or related field.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated proficiency in computer technology skills.
At least 2 years of direct responsibility for monitoring student athletes’ NCAA eligibility.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience providing academic, personal, emotional, and crisis intervention support.
Ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students in a learning environment.
Experience working with an ethnically diverse student population.
Basic understanding of research methods and assessments.
Basic and practical understanding of how college students learn (college student learning theory).
Familiarity Intercollegiate Athletics and NCAA eligibility rules (Bylaw 14).
