This recruitment will be used to fill four part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week during school session and up to 40 hours when not in session) Student Support Services (Athlete Academic Mentor) positions for the Department of Academic Services for Student Athletes (
ASA
) at Oregon State University (
OSU
).
The objective of the
ASA
Mentor Program is to provide academic and personal support to all student athletes through consistent engagement and navigation of their academic responsibilities. In conjunction with
ASA
staff, the
ASA
Mentor Program strives to assist students in becoming independent learners who progress through
ASA
learning services and feel empowered to meet future educational goals and challenges.
Anticipated Hourly Rate: $15.40
Coordinate and lead biweekly meetings with assigned cohort
Educate student-athletes on developing varying study strategies and skills to become an independent learner
If a student needs additional support, work with the learning specialists to identify techniques unique to their learning style
Utilize and facilitate a task management system (checklists) that is used and monitored by the
ASA
staff, student mentors, study hall facilitators, and the assigned student-athletes
Evaluate GradesFirst academic appointment notes daily and monitor grades on biweekly basis
Complete designated grade reports for the assigned sport programs and their academic counselors
Meet with academic counselors at least once per week to communicate student-athletes’ academic progress and any potential educational impacting issues
Schedule tutoring sessions through GradesFirst for targeted courses and communicate any changes as soon as possible to the learning specialists
Communicate with the Mentor Program Coordinator/Learning Specialist as soon as any issues of concern arise
Meet with learning specialist for
NCAA
Compliance and Gradesfirst training, as well other additional training and professional development throughout the term (dependent upon need and interest in the field)
Abide by all policies and procedures listed in the Mentor Program Manual

Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (
USCIS
). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (
OIS
), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Must be able to follow
ASA
Professional Distance Policy.
ASA
defines professional distance as being friendly with student athletes, but not necessarily being a friend. Our professional distance policy prevents
ASA
student staff from spending time with student athletes outside of their tutoring or study facilitation sessions. This also includes any non-professional relationships with student athletes; friendships or fraternization and romantic relationships. Examples of non-professional relationships that may breach ASA’s professional distance policy might include:
Being a roommate with an
OSU
student athlete
A living situation where a student athlete might regularly visit; For example, a roommate that has a sibling on OSU’s roster
Dating a student athlete
Having a close friendship with a student athlete
Junior standing or higher
Graduate Student
At least a 3.0 overall
GPA
Prior tutoring or mentorship experience
Previous leadership experience
Experience working with diverse groups of people, especially students
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
The student worker may be required to work up to an approximate 24 hours per week.
