Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Bronco One Stop is a centralized space for students to access common student services to strengthen their ability to navigate Fayetteville State University. The goal of Bronco One Stop is to enhance the student experience with the application process, academic records, financial aid, making payments, speaking with an advisor to register for classes, gaining assistance with degree planning, receiving academic support and navigating university resources.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Athletic Academic Coordinator position is housed within the Bronco One Stop Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success & Enrollment Management. The Coordinator advises and facilitates academic support for student athletes via Bronco One Stop support services and initiatives. This position works closely with multiple office on campus and provides insight for academic issues surrounding student-athletes. The coordinator also works collaboratively with relevant constituent groups and individuals, including retention counselors, academic advisors, faculty, coaches, disability support services, and academic support staff to enhance the academic success of student-athletes. It is the responsibility of the Athletic Academic Coordinator to organize, implement, facilitate, oversee and evaluate all facets of the Athletic Academic Advising and Academic Support. The coordinator will manage the academic support center for athletes. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.
Academic Advising – 50%
Foster persistence and completion by maintaining a caseload of students experiencing academic difficulty
Provide proactive and individualized retention assistance to the assigned caseload of students facilitated by an early alert/advising system powered by predictive analytics.
Respond to faculty-submitted and automatically generated alerts for the assigned caseload of student athletes.
Identify at-risk students within the assigned caseload of students using reports and analyzing data. Provide proactive outreach to the at-risk students within the assigned caseload of student athletes connecting them with appropriate interventions and student support.
Engage assigned caseload of students in educational planning activities to help guide them to achieve their educational goals in conjunction with their appropriate academic advisor.
Empower assigned caseload of students to effectively communicate with their academic advisors, faculty, and student services and become better connected to resources and support services such as financial aid, career services, and disability services.
Facilitate workshops and presentations relevant to student athletes’ needs and concerns.
Maintain open and clear communication with Retention Specialists and the Advising Center Director to ensure consistency in academic success initiatives and approaches to improve students’ persistence and retention toward graduation.
Maintain privacy and confidentiality of student information per
FERPA
rules and regulations.
Promote a positive and successful learning experience for student-athletes to increase student retention, success, and completion.
Administration and Management – 20%
Understand and deliver strategies to assist students on a variety of academic topics including but not limited to:
Create supplemental materials to aid in student learning and academic skill development: Time management, Organization, Notetaking, Reading Strategies, Study Skills, Memorization, Exam Preparation & Test Taking Strategies, Motivation & Attitude, Goal Setting
Academic Resources & Asking for Help: Communicating with Professors.
Help students identify their learning strengths and weaknesses and connect them with the necessary university resources to aid in success.
Evaluate student learning styles, skills, deficiencies, and goals; identify appropriate learning resources for them to use; and facilitate their use of those resources.
Assist the Advising Center Director and other institution administration as needed in collecting quantitative and qualitative data associated with the reporting.
Communication – 15%
Serve students through various platforms and methods (virtual, in-person, hybrid, etc.) to meet their needs.
Conduct weekly check-ins with assigned students via in-person, text, phone, and email.
Design, monitor and evaluate the academic support elements for student-athlete academic success.
Teach Freshman Seminar Courses.
Institute study skills and time management workshops with first year student-athletes.
Facilitate small group specialty sessions.
Serve as liaison between athletics and the learning centers to support athletes with academic support.
Program Management – 10%
Provide written policies and procedures for the Student-Athlete Manual and Department Policies and Procedures Manual.
Assist the
AVC
and other institution administrations as needed in collecting quantitative and qualitative data associated with reporting on student-athletes.
Work closely with the
EAB
technology analyst and the student engagement manager to track the continuous improvement process.
Document meeting summary with each student in
EAB
Navigate.
Monitor student-athlete’s academic progress and program effectiveness through a variety of reporting tools.
Promotes the overall athletic academic support programming for all student-athletes.
Respond to inquiries from students with care and quality services via phone, email and in person.
Regularly attend assigned academic department meetings, engage with faculty/staff, and other departmental meetings, as appropriate, to remain current with departmental policies and procedures.
Coordinate efforts with student services, athletics, faculty and academic support offices.
Work with campus resources to design and implement a thorough academic support network for non-qualifiers and high-risk student-athletes.
Communicate with the athletic department as well as faculty members on the academic progress of students and schedule discussions relative to academic success and support for students.
Identify faculty and staff to assist with tutoring and conduct academic workshops.
Professional Development
Percentage of Time – 5%
Actively seek professional development opportunities to maintain and improve knowledge and expertise in advising, diversity, and technology.
Master’s degree and one to three years of experience is required.
