General Summary:

As part of UMass Boston’s Holistic Performance Team, an integrated program designed to enhance both individual student-athlete and team performance through a holistic approach combining sports medicine, athletic training, strength and conditioning, sport science, sports dietetics, and mental health/well-being, the Athletic Trainer will play a key role in supporting student-athlete health, performance, and recovery. Responsibilities include the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, ensuring a cohesive, collaborative, and effective approach to student- athlete wellness. This position serves UMass Boston’s 20 NCAA Division III varsity athletic programs, which compete in the Little East Conference.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine & Operations, the Athletic Trainer will manage the care of potentially catastrophic, acute, and chronic injuries, including return-to-play decisions, in accordance with the recognized scope of practice for athletic training. This role requires strong collaboration with the Associate Athletic Director for Sport Performance, the Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine & Operations, coaching staff, athletic administrators, strength and conditioning personnel, and, when necessary, the team physician. Regular attendance at assigned team practices as well as home and away competitions is required. The Athletic Trainer is expected to work effectively with student-athletes, coaches, and department staff, while upholding the professional standards and ethical guidelines established by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA)

Examples of Duties:

  • Uphold and promote the mission, vision, and core values of UMass Boston Athletics and Recreation in all programs, services, and interactions.
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine & Operations in the application of principles, methods and procedures of evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries, pre-conditioning and reconditioning of athlete through the use of appropriate preventative and support devices, temporary splinting and bracing, therapeutic modalities through the administration of thermal, mechanical, electromagnetic, light energies, and evidence based treatment techniques under the direction of a physician. Athletic Training duties also, include counseling and instruction to coaches, athletes, parents, medical personnel and communities in the area of care and prevention of athletic injuries;
  • Coordinating and providing medical coverage for home and away contest as well as events as assigned by Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Performance & Operations;
  • Coordinate and schedule medical referrals with on- and off-campus healthcare providers to support student-athlete health and determine their eligibility for safe participation in practices and competitions.
  • Evaluate and recommend new techniques, equipment, and technologies to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the sports medicine program.
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine & Operations in developing and fostering a positive relationship with the coaching staff and student-athletes;· Assist the Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine & Operations in developing and maintaining communication with the University Health Services, Boston Children’s Hospital, and other external healthcare resources;
  • Maintain a positive and collaborative working relationship with administration, coaching staff, and institutional personnel to support the overall success of the athletics program.
  • Uphold strict confidentiality regarding student-athletes’ health information and prioritize their well-being in all interactions and decisions;
  • Assist Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine & Operations in the daily sports medicine area activities;
