Description

Under work direction of the Director, Athletics, and under the medical direction of the team physician, the Athletic Trainer provides specialized health services, such as injury prevention, first aid, emergency care, and evaluation and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, to all student athletes.

Responsibilities

Provide emergency care and first aid to student athletes during practice sessions, athletic contests and other sporting events; provide immediate care for faculty, staff and visiting teams as needed.

Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic life-saving techniques; recognize and provide appropriate care for shock, fractures, dislocations, sprains, internal injuries and other conditions; control external hemorrhaging and immobilize spinal injuries.

Provide care for surface wounds and skin conditions such as bruises, lacerations, abrasions, punctures, blisters, rashes and athlete's foot.

Evaluate acute and chronic injuries to student athletes; obtain pertinent medical history, examine and palpate tissues to detect swelling, pain or deformity; test for range of motion, muscle strength, ligament laxity and neurological damage.

Design, initiate and evaluate rehabilitation programs for acute, chronic and post-operative injuries; apply various types of manual therapeutic exercise; apply ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, whirlpools or other therapies as directed by the team physician.

Apply therapeutic and protective bandaging, wrapping, taping or padding; design and instruct athletes in the use of crutches and home rehabilitation programs.
