SUMMARY
Staff position to assist in the organization and implementation of the athletic health care delivery program for all Calvin University NCAA Division III varsity and junior varsity athletic teams and ACHA men’s ice hockey teams.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following are representative duties/responsibilities of the position. Other duties may be assigned.
Clinical Duties
Assist Head Athletic Trainer in the daily operations of the Sports Medicine Office by monitoring daily practice/game schedules, coordination of on-campus physician clinics, and managing inventory of medical supplies.
Assessment, management, rehabilitation, and prevention of athletic injuries for assigned teams.
Work with Head Athletic Trainer to complete annual pre-participation exams and ensure compliance with all NCAA health and safety legislation.
Medical documentation of injuries and illnesses in compliance with federal and state regulations.
Provide medical coverage for practices and contests.
Provides verbal and/or written information for student-athletes to assist in the prevention and/or treatment of injuries.
Provide verbal and written information about injuries to coaching staff, strength and conditioning staff, and team physicians to manage injuries appropriately.
Educational/Instructional Duties
Assists the head athletic trainer as a preceptor for athletic training students which may include providing appropriate communication with the respective college/university field supervisor.
Organizational/Management Duties
Assists in maintaining all medical records in accordance with federal and state regulations.
Assists in maintaining good communication with the insurance providers, including our secondary provider, and submits all paperwork required for insurance claims.
Assists in maintaining the optimal health, safety, and welfare of all constituencies associated with Calvin Sports Medicine.
Other duties as assigned by the head athletic trainer.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for assisting in the supervision of student employees (Student Sports Medicine Assistants).
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
The position requires a Bachelor or Master’s degree in athletic training from a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited college or university; one to three years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s degree in athletic training is preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Requires current and ongoing certification by the Board of Certification, Inc (BOC). Requires current and ongoing license to practice athletic training in the State of Michigan by the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). Requires current and ongoing First aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
The position requires the ability to draft and edit correspondence; train or instruct employees in the same department; or tasks requiring significant communication skills. Handles confidential information following HIPPA guidelines.
COMPLEXITY
The position requires the ability to carry out detailed written/oral/diagram form instructions. Deals with standardized situations involving several variables.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The position has the authority, if approved, to take action or make recommendations that will affect procedures, processes, and practices involving customers or employees within the same department.
DECISION MAKING/JUDGEMENT
This position regularly requires independent judgment in setting priorities and organizing work to accomplish results. Some of the responsibilities of this position are performed in accordance with existing procedures and instructions. Some of the responsibilities of this position will require making clinical decisions about the safety and wellbeing of student-athletes and their participation in Calvin University Athletics programs.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Demonstrates the ability to maintain good working relationships with a variety of constituencies including student athletes, athletic training students, insurance providers, parents/guardians, other health care providers, and colleagues.
Ability to assist in creating a positive health care environment that encourages and supports Christian lifestyle values and choices by student athletes.
Ability to tolerate and accommodate varied and/or extended working hours, including evenings and weekends as well as travel for some weekend and/or extended trips (e.g. regional and national tournaments, spring break, or holiday/public relations trips).
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The position requires occasional participation with peers or customers, and deals with items of a routine nature with frequent supervision. Participants address common issues and present information beneficial and routine to resolving problems.
