Summary:
Responsible for the prevention, care, evaluation, rehabilitation, and treatment of acute and chronic orthopedic and medical conditions related to participation in intercollegiate athletics for not less than 2 varsity teams. Assist the Assistant AD for Sports Medicine with providing medical treatment for all student-athletes and the day-to-day administration of the American University Sports Medicine program. This position reports directly to the Assistant AD for Sports Medicine and practices under general supervision of Team Physicians as defined by the DC Department of Health Chapter 104.
Essential Functions:
Attends practices and contests, both home and away for assigned teams. Assures the readiness of athletes to participate in sport and safety of the playing area. Provide initial evaluation of injuries and provides immediate care to injured athletes to determine extent of injury and need for further follow-up meeting.
Coordinate and administer treatment and rehabilitation plans for patients. Assess progress and discharge based on their functional status for post-operative, acute, subacute, and chronic injury or medical conditions.
Utilize physical modalities of heat, cold, light, massage, traction, water, air, electric stimulation, sound, or mechanical, therapeutic and post rehabilitative exercise, and/or appropriate preventative or supportive devices to assist in the recovery or prevention of injury or illness.
Provide immediate and emergency care of athletic injuries, including common emergency medical situation, which may include, but is not limited to, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), an automated external defibrillator (AED), spinal stabilization techniques, standardized testing for head-related injuries, or making referrals for follow-up care.
Provide education, guidance, or counseling regarding athletic training and the prevention, care, and treatment of athletic injuries.They may also assess and promote awareness and education concerning issues such as, but not limited to, risks of illness or injury (orthopedic, neurological, systemic), environmental stress, nutrition, equipment and facilities, and general health and well-being.
Administration of the training room to ensure that the facility runs smoothly: maintains accurate injury and treatment records, tracks inventory; cleans and maintains modalities; cleans, maintains and restocks treatment and taping areas; supervises hourly work study students.
Processing and documenting the handling of insurance claims on behalf of student-athletes for services related to injuries and illnesses directly related to participation in intercollegiate athletics for American University. This involves direct communication with our team physicians, the student-athlete’s primary insurance provider(s) and outside medical provider(s).
Maintains athletic training knowledge through regular attendance at conferences and symposium, regularly reading scholarly articles and journals relevant to the field of athletic training and through continuing research in field of athletic training, obtaining at minimum 50 CEUs per two-year cycle as dictated by the BOC.
Communicates with team physician, administrators and respective sport head coaches as to the status and progress of injured student-athletes.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
Master’s degree in athletic training or related field.
Degree from a CAATE accredited Athletic Training Education Program.
BOC certification.
Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) certification at the Basic Life Support/Professional Rescuer level or above.
District of Columbia Athletic Trainer Licensure or eligibility to obtain licensure.
NPI Number.
Experience working in college athletics and at the NCAA Division-I level is preferred.
