Serve as primary contact, including comprehensive one-on-one or group advisement and guidance, for student-athletes for the duration of the academic cycle, from prospect to graduate understanding the interrelationship and need for coordinated action within the total student-athlete services program. The incumbent will practice basic counseling techniques, and provide advisement concerning career, academic, learning, campus life and/or related issues.
Monitor, investigate and analyze student-athlete academic performance, progress towards degree and NCAA eligibility; including initial, transfer, and continuing eligibility.
Independently perform highly complex day-to-day student-athlete academic advising to determine appropriate coursework for progress towards degree while maintaining NCAA eligibility.
Using high-level analytical and human relation skills provide comprehensive advisement and mentoring to assist student- athletes to identify and address academic needs, with increased consideration for at-risk student-athlete challenges.
The incumbent will practice a high degree of judgment or persuasiveness, imagination and professional skills and knowledge in intercollegiate athletics, as well as a general understanding of the interrelations and need for coordinated action within CSUSB Athletics.
Utilize technology to maintain detailed and current student records including a program of study outline, transcript general education evaluation records, progress reports, advising contacts, referrals, and test scores.
In coordination with Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) and Senior Associate Director of Athletics, serve as a key member of NCAA Eligibility Certification Team.
Responsible for assessing and analyzing data to recognize specific needs to develop solutions in support of student-athlete success. Plan and implement creative solutions based on assessments and analysis.

Academic Support:
Establish and lead student-athlete tutoring and study hall program to ensure success of all student-athletes and support of department academic goals. Tutoring program shall include strong, positive and collaborative campus partnerships with Undergraduate Studies, Tutoring Center, Math Center and other campus programs to provide qualified services as needed.
Coordination, supervision and mentorship of tutors and study hall monitors as well as budget management.
Inventory and maintenance of all software and hardware technology in the Johnnie Ann Ralph Room for Student Success to ensure and enhance academic success.
Identify student athlete academic deficiencies for learning and support students to find solutions for success.
Provide connection to programing for enhancing and supporting the academic challenges student athletes face.
Student Athlete-Programming:
Plan and/or support student-athlete related events such as Student-Athlete Speaker Series, Student-Athlete Welcome Back BBQ, Homecoming, Faculty Appreciation/MVP, Academic Recognition Night, and Pack Attack competition.
Adjust approaches and techniques as necessary to continually find avenues to support the student-athlete voice.
Plan, design, and conduct Student-Services-related instructional sessions, courses, and/or seminars, related to academics.
Recruiting, Admissions, and Outreach:
Meet with prospective student-athletes during on-campus visits to inform, prepare, and assist coaches and prospects in the recruitment and admissions process.
Effectively communicate first year and transfer admission requirements to coaches and staff.
Meet with incoming student-athletes during campus sponsored orientation and first year programs to support transition to CSUSB, academic requirements and course scheduling.
Committee Service:
Establish and maintain effective working relationships as the liaison to Enrollment Management, Services to Students with Disabilities Office, Undergraduate Studies, Orientation and First Year Experience, Housing, and other student service offices.
Continually review existing and proposed academic-related policies and practices and propose changes and develop full revisions as appropriate; create and maintain annual Student-Athlete Handbook/Planner.
Nominate student-athletes and teams for conference, regional, and national academic awards.
Liaison to Chi Alpha Sigma, national association for Student-Athlete Honor Society.
Serve on NCAA, conference, and campus committees as it relates to academic advising, student success and NCAA compliance.
Other classification related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
Required Qualifications
Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management; research and interviewing techniques; principles of individual and group behavior; the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures, and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned; and the basic principles, practices, and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned.
Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of an intercollegiate athletics program, and its relationship to the total campus operation; interpret and apply program rules and regulations; gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; present clear and concise information orally and in written reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies.
Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multiaged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.

Working knowledge of student services programs within CSUSB.
Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
Preferred Qualifications
One year advising student-athletes in a collegiate athletics program, specifically NCAA Division II, is preferred.
Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,333 - $5,583 per month
Classification Salary Range: $5,276 - $7,517 per month
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
