The NCCU Department of Athletics’ primary purpose is to provide leadership for an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program. The NCCU Department of Athletics places the highest priority on a quality academic and athletic experience as part of the overall education of student-athletes. The Department of Athletics seeks to strengthen the integration of the athletics program objectives with academic development objectives. | | Primary Purpose of Position |
Provides academic advisement for prospective, current, and former students within a specified undergraduate academic department or equivalent unit of a college. Assist University College in assesses academic level, attends to student academic inquiries, assists in the resolution of individual academic problems, and advises on academic program changes. Advises and assists students in the development of academic plans and class schedules Analyzes applications, transfer evaluations, and transcripts for entry and exit from the university. Develops and maintains appropriate files and records. | | Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information. Ability to analyze course prerequisites, certification, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements. Ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments. Knowledge of academic standards governing student probation, suspension, and/or expulsion. Records maintenance skills.Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues. Ability to gather data, compiles information, and prepares reports. Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to analyze and solve problems. | | Minimum Education/Experience |
Required Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, behavioral science, or related field and one year of work experience in academic advising, teaching or in a student services environment, or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience in which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained (see below). Master’s degree preferred. Good oral and written communications skills, along with good organizational skills required. Requires basic knowledge in the usage of personal computers, including word processing.

Equivalencies: A bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, behavioral science, or related field and one year of work experience in academic advising, teaching or in a student services environment OR a Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field and two or more years of work experience in academic advising, teaching or in a student services environment OR a Master’s degree or higher.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer academic advising and/or higher education administration experience. Division I experience preferred. Familiar with student information systems, i.e., BANNER, SIS+. Knowledge of NCAA/MEAC rules and regulations. | | Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation |

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Answers student inquiries and resolves problems related to curriculum and course prerequisites, referring to catalogues, written course descriptions, and other appropriate sources. Assists students in the selection of appropriate courses and concentrations in terms of students’ stated preferences. |

Receives and reviews transcripts to ensure eligibility for admission to a specific college or program including evaluation of transfer credits and applicability of academic credit to program requirements. Reviews student files to ensure deadlines are met for completing various graduation requirements such as coursework requirements, theses, comprehensive examinations, and other specific program requirements. Reviews student grade reports each semester to determine probation and/or
suspension based on academic regulations of university; notifies and places students on probation or suspension; returns students to regular status after sufficient progress is made. |

Assists faculty advisement, athletic coaches, and/or other counseling personnel by providing records, evaluations, interpretations, and other requested data, recommendations, and conclusions. Coordinates with other organizational units to process admission and graduation requests and to aid in resolution of academic problems. |

Prepares form letters, individual letters, and information packets in support of group and/or individual recruitment efforts; attends and participates in individual and group orientation and other information dissemination sessions.
