Job Title:   Carver Center Director & Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

 

Status: Exempt, Combined full-time (75% Men's Basketball Coach, 25% Carver Center Director), academic year

 

Reports To:   Athletic Director & Head Men's Basketball Coach

      

Overview:   This position combines positions.  As Carver Center Director, this position oversees the contest and practice schedule at the Carver Center, including all set-up and take-down requirements for home intercollegiate athletic contests in the building.  As Assistant Coach, assists the head coach with recruiting, coaching and conditioning activities for the men's basketball program.

 

Job Duties

 

Carver Center Director (25%): 

1. Manage facility calendars and communication of schedules for all Carver Center activities including, but not limited to, intercollegiate athletic events, practices, conferences and meetings; staffing, set- up and breakdown for events in accordance with league, conference and NCAA regulations; collaborating with various athletic department staff and coaches, external groups and vendors.

2. Serve as the liaison to other athletic department areas including, but not limited to, sports information, athletic training and equipment as it pertains to game day operations.

3. Assist with day- to- day maintenance of all athletic department facilities.

4. Supervision of game day staff required for set-up and take-down for home athletic contests and special events.

5. Apply critical thinking skills to assist Athletic Director with creation and implementation of strategies for event coordination and playing and practice season activities.

6. Other duties as assigned

 

Assistant Men's Basketball Coach (75%):

1. Plan, conduct and evaluate practice activities for designated players.  Provide group and individual assistance in a manner that engages the athletes and builds commitment to the program.

2. Work collaboratively with other members of the coaching staff to integrate efforts and create program success.  Assist other staff members with activities as need to reach the goals of the team.

3. Meet with prospective students and their family members both on campus and at remote locations.  Provide advice and counsel on the admissions process, the Augustana experience and the integral role of the student athlete in overall campus life.

4. Provide feedback to assigned staff members and student workers on work performance and overall effectiveness. 

5. Create teaching curriculums for physical education activity courses as assigned during the academic year.  Find ways to engage students in learning activities.

6. Other duties as assigned

 

Requirements:

 

Education: Bachelor's degree required, MA preferred in a related field.

 

Experience & Skills:  

• 3 or more years' experience in a coaching role.  Experience in small college athletics is highly preferred.
• Ability to understand and comply with a variety of regulations from the NCAA as well as other regulatory bodies.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to interact with a diverse group of coaches, administrators, student athletes, prospective students and families, and other members of the campus community.
• Strong prioritization and organizational skills.
• Must have a thorough understanding of and accountability to NCAA and CCIW rules and regulations.  Strong commitment to the academic and athletic success of the student athlete.

Additional Information:

Pay and Benefits:   Starting salary for this role is $40,000 to $55,000 per year, depending on qualifications and relevant experience. We offer a competitive benefits package designed to support the needs of employees. Work Hours & Travel: This position requires travel to away games during the season and to high school games, events, and other opportunities to meet with prospective students.  Extended weekend and evening hours especially during the basketball season are expected. Current valid driver's license required.

 

Physical Requirements:   Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a frequent basis.  Also required is the ability to listen, hear, speak, climb stairs, bend, stoop, and stand for intermittently long periods of time.  Exposure to outside weather and extreme temperatures is occasionally required.  Long work days, particularly during the recruiting and competition season on a frequent basis.

 

Special Requirements:   As key personnel representing the College, this position requires excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to relate to a diverse population, and the ability and willingness to model the mission and high standard of behavior of Augustana College. Successful candidates must pass a criminal background check.
