Position Summary

This is a 12- month Wellness Center staff position. This position will serve as a counseling resource to the College community by performing such duties as individual counseling (based on a brief therapy model/philosophy), crisis intervention, assessment, case management, referral, training, group counseling, and on-call responsibilities. In addition, participation in campus events such as orientations and outreach programming for the college community in areas related to student health and belonging.

Description of Key Responsibilities

1. Provide culturally affirming mental health counseling services and resources to students of the College both in-person and virtually. Perform such duties as brief individual therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, case management, training and consultation. This includes an on-call responsibility shared with full time clinical counseling staff. On-call responsibility means emergency consultation and/or intervention that is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in rotation as shared with other counseling staff.2. Provides students with referrals to on and off-campus resources as appropriate. Provide case management support and follow up with students to support transition to outside care, including assistance in navigating insurance. Provides consultation and referrals to staff and faculty as needed.3. Complete appropriate clinical documentation on all client and consultation contacts in a timely manner and in compliance with ethical standards.4. Provides expert clinical services specifically to meet the needs of student athletes, and coordinates the development and delivery of psycho-educational programming to student athletes and athletic staff on meaningful topics central to the mental health needs of student athletes.5. Actively contribute to fostering an environment and culture of belonging by identifying ways to celebrate diversity, ensure clinical care and policies are equitable, and programming and services cultivate a sense of belonging. Focus on the safety and wellbeing of students of color and other marginalized students through improving access to clinical care, and participate in trainings and community engagement.6. Develop collaborative relationships with the college community by interacting and initiating contacts with student groups and organizations, residence halls, and departments serving specific student populations such as commuters, first-generation students, student athletes, and international students.7. Provide services to student athletes and other students interested in performance-related advancement such as students involved in music and theater, communication majors, and those with test anxiety.8. Assist with the assessment and consultation for students dealing with behavioral concerns (self-harm, social withdrawal, eating disorders, substance abuse, etc.) Provide risk assessments, counseling and/or referrals for students referred to the Center through the campus early alert referral system, s student conduct process or other referral process.9. Collaborate with appropriate campus staff in order to provide quality care and support student success, including the offices of Dean of Students, Residence Life, Student Success (academic advising), Title IX, and Student Disability Services.10. Manage follow-up with students managing multiple stressors and/or students who have been hospitalized to ensure appropriate supports are in place to optimize student success and safety, often in collaboration with the Dean of Students Office.11. Participate in regular staff meetings, case consultations, and professional development training.12. Stay current on health and mental health issues, particularly as they relate to college student populations. Participate in continuing education as required for state licensure.13. Present and assist with proactive and engaging campus-based mental health educational programming.14. Lead and/or guide the Graduate Assistants and Peer Health Educators to facilitate mental health outreach and programming through social media and live campus events. Topics may include depression and anxiety, substance use, social skills, anger management, violence prevention, eating disorders, healthy relationships, decision-making skills, etc.15. May advise and provide direction to the Graduate Assistants, Peer Health Educators and/or student groups or join committees that have a wellness focus in order to assist and enhance support for student mental health and belonging.16. Perform other related duties and tasks as appropriately assigned.Other – Key Responsibilities:1. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Customer service is critical to the success of any organization that deals with customers. Strong customer service skills can build retention and visibility as NCC strives to distinguish itself from its competitors. An individual in this position must possess the proficiency, wherewithal and knowledge of principles and processes for providing high-quality customer and personal services to both internal and external customers of the College.1. Possess excellent counseling and assessment skills with the ability to facilitate group interaction as well as individual counseling12. Strong ability to manage a crisis situation and to follow-up with students, and their families as appropriate, who have experienced a traumatic event13. Strong ability to work with electronic records system, Titanium, as well as scan, and use technology regularly. Interest in gaining technological skills to work most efficiently14. Ability to work effectively as a member of a staff where teamwork and cooperation are the rule. This includes the ability to communicate directly, professionally, and respectfully both positive and critical feedback15. Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in a manner consistent with professional standards, including making oral presentations to groups and contributing to the development of high-quality written materials which reflect positively on the College16. Ability to quickly grasp knowledge of the College organization and operation especially as it relates to the Dyson Wellness Center17. Ability to show empathy and be nonjudgmental toward distressed individuals18. Excellent organizational and written/verbal communication skills19. Strong critical thinking and sound judgment20. Distinguishing Characteristics

The person in this position assists the Director of the Wellness Center and Director of Counseling by providing counseling services and consultations to current students of the College, and administrative duties supporting the counseling services. In addition, this position serves as a leader for sport and performance related initiatives by working closely with athletic staff and trainers. In conjunction with the Director of Counseling, the person in this position may provide leadership for the counselors such as case documentation oversight and supervision as needed. The position is collaborative with their colleagues to promote and facilitate prevention education programs and campus outreach to contribute to a culture of belonging.The position will require evening and weekend hours as needed to meet the needs of a residential campus.

Education/Training

Master’s degree in counseling or clinical psychology, social work, or a related field.

Experience

Minimum of one year clinical mental health counseling experience and work with athletes including individual and group therapies, crisis intervention, outreach and psychoeducational programming. A strong desire to work with young adult/college aged populations and possesses multicultural competence. Some experience in a higher education academic setting is preferred, as well as experience working with eating disorders, substance abuse/addictions, and/or neurodivergent disorders preferred. Sport psychology background preferred.

Licenses or Certifications

A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required.This position requires a current professional license in the state of Illinois: Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Social Worker, or Licensed Clinical Psychologist or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
