Current research funding comes from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, American College of Sports Medicine, American Heart Association, The Robert E. Leet and Clara Guthrie Patterson Trust, and a variety of other foundation and industry collaborators. The Department of Exercise Science currently has one teaching lab, and 5 research labs aligned with faculty expertise, and maintains strong clinical and basic research collaborations with investigators around campus in chemistry, biology, psychology, nutrition, public health, and at neighboring hospitals (SUNY Upstate Medical University, Joslin Diabetes Center). The department houses one of the largest undergraduate programs in Falk College with approximately 300 Health & Exercise Science students. While small, our doctoral program was previously ranked among the top 25 programs in the nation by the National Academy of Kinesiology. Our doctoral students have been uniformly successful in gaining post-doc and faculty-line opportunities post-graduation. The department aspires to become one of the leading research-focused Exercise Science/Kinesiology programs in New York State and regionally (i.e., the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern US), and seeks a leader who will work to leverage opportunities within the sport and health focus of the college and the University.

The communication abilities and cross-cultural competencies to maximize effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members. Must be able to be tenured as a full-professor.
The successful candidate will possess an impressive record of scholarship, as well as undergraduate teaching and graduate mentorship for an appointment at the rank of full Professor. We encourage creative, dynamic, and passionate candidates with an earned doctorate in exercise science, kinesiology, or a related area to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with post-doctoral training and a strong research agenda as supported by peer-reviewed publications and federal and/or major foundation grant funding. All areas of expertise within the general field of exercise science will be considered. A collaborative multi-disciplinary approach to research that transects faculty interests in exercise/physical activity, applied physiology, chronic disease, and/or disability is desirable. The ideal candidate must also demonstrate a solid commitment to teaching, student mentoring/advising, and professional service. The College is interested in candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching, research, or service toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
The Chair will be responsible for the department’s academic and strategic leadership and provide public advocacy for the department at the university, regional, and national levels.
