Primary Purpose of Position
The Deputy Athletics Director / Chief Revenue Officer serves as a senior executive on the Athletics Director’s leadership cabinet, with primary responsibility for driving comprehensive revenue generation, brand elevation, and fan experience innovation across all external affairs units. This role requires a forward-thinking and entrepreneurial leader who can translate bold ideas into measurable results—seamlessly blending creative strategy with disciplined commercial execution to grow a dynamic and sustainable athletics enterprise.
The Chief Revenue Officer will cultivate and lead strategic partnerships with the City of Charlotte, corporate stakeholders, and the broader community to position the 49ers as a premier destination for sports, entertainment, and civic engagement. Through collaboration, innovation, and data-informed decision-making, this leader will enhance the department’s visibility, expand its revenue portfolio, and elevate the overall brand experience.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Develop and execute a comprehensive, multi-year external revenue growth strategy across all business verticals
Set and surpass aggressive annual revenue targets in sponsorships, ticketing, premium hospitality, concessions, licensing, and event revenue
Build and manage a unified P&L across all external affairs units, delivering consistent year-over-year revenue growth
Identify, negotiate, and close high-value partnerships, including naming rights, multimedia rights, and marquee sponsorship deals
Leverage data analytics and market intelligence to refine pricing models, revenue forecasting, and go-to-market strategies
Evaluate, negotiate, and manage vendor and third-party contracts (multimedia rights, ticketing platforms, concessions, hospitality, secondary market) to optimize value and performance
Serve as the chief creative and brand ambassador for Charlotte Athletics, translating bold ideas into compelling, memorable fan and community experiences
Conceive and launch signature brand campaigns, game-day entertainment concepts, and promotional programs that drive attendance, fan engagement, and national visibility
Champion innovation in content creation, digital media, and visual storytelling to build a distinctive 49ers identity
Lead the development and execution of integrated marketing campaigns across traditional, digital, and social platforms
Drive the creative strategy for major milestones — naming rights launches, capital campaigns, championship moments, and special events
Serve as a primary liaison between Charlotte Athletics and the City of Charlotte, building authentic partnerships that advance shared civic goals around sports, culture, and community investment
Develop and execute community engagement initiatives that deepen relationships with Charlotte-area businesses, civic organizations, faith communities, schools, and neighborhood groups
Position Charlotte Athletics as an anchor institution in the Charlotte sports and entertainment ecosystem, collaborating with the Charlotte Hornets, Charlotte FC, Carolina Panthers, and other sports/entertainment entities
Create programming that celebrates Charlotte’s diverse and growing population, ensuring the 49ers brand is inclusive, accessible, and reflective of the community it serves
Identify and activate cause-marketing and corporate social responsibility partnerships that generate revenue while advancing the social good
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum of 8–10 years of progressive leadership experience in revenue generation, external affairs, or business development within collegiate athletics, professional sports, or sports media/entertainment
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Master’s degree (MBA or related) strongly preferred
Experience in Division I collegiate athletics or a professional sports organization
Established relationships within the Charlotte, Southeast, or national sports business community
Experience with P&L management and complex vendor contract negotiations. Track record of launching creative brand campaigns that produced measurable audience growth and revenue impact
Familiarity with the Charlotte market and its unique sports, business, and cultural landscape
Experience with naming rights, capital campaigns, or facility branding initiatives. Demonstrated ability to develop and activate community and cause-marketing partnerships
