Job Description:

Summary

The development officer for athletics will have direct oversight, vision, and execution of the Bellarmine individual giving strategy for athletics. This position will secure major gifts primarily for athletics and will develop partnerships with athletics leaders.

Essential Functions:

Major Tasks and Responsibilities - Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts from a core group of prospects and donors.

1. Maintain a portfolio list of 75 individuals that are capable of making a major gift of $50,000 or more
2. Identify, cultivate, solicit, close and steward major gifts
3. Work to match donor passions with Bellarmine University's needs which may include general support, scholarships, capital projects or other specific athletics projects
4. Coordinates with the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, the President, academic/athletics leaders, and others to ascertain specific needs in various operational areas; and acquire their assistance in developing strategies and gift solicitations (as needed)
5. Promote relationships between Bellarmine University and all potential major donors
6. Serve as an ambassador of Bellarmine University, providing information on the institution's capabilities, mission, vision, and its ability to contribute to the region's growth, security, and culture
7. Develop strategies for the acquisition of gifts which may involve the participation of staff and faculty, vice presidents, the president, or prominent alumni and friends of Bellarmine University
8. Prepare written proposals to be submitted for prospect consideration
9. Assure that all gifts received are properly recorded, acknowledged, and administered by Bellarmine. Ascertain that donors receive appropriate stewardship for their gifts
10. Coordinate communication through the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations and the DAR team to ensure that all necessary individuals are aware of the specific, ongoing efforts to acquire major gifts
11. Develop an annual plan of work, including contact goals, fundraising goals, and annual cost estimates of expenditures to the Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations
12. Plan, coordinate, assist, and attend various donor relations and special events for donors and Bellarmine University community
13. Work closely with senior athletics leaders on determining funding priorities
14. Assist with strategy setting with the Knights Athletics Association
15. Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations

This position will be in a basic office environment and is a full-time, 12 month per year position and will require evening and weekend work. Travel away from Bellarmine University, by car or other means of transportation, is required. This job description identifies the key responsibilities and expectations for performance. It cannot encompass all specific job tasks that an employee may be required to perform. Employees are required to follow any other job-related instructions and perform job-related duties as may be reasonably assigned by their supervisor.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree required, an advanced degree is preferred
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
• Must have a thorough understanding of all aspects of fundraising
• Individual should have a proven record of cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding major gifts
• Prior experience, preferably in a higher education setting, of major giving development is necessary
• A high degree of diplomacy and integrity is required, as well as exceptional motivation and creativity
• The individual must be able to engender confidence, enthusiasm, and promote financial support among various Bellarmine University constituencies
• Must be able to present well-developed strategies and implement effective courses of action in prospect solicitation
• Travel may be required to call on prospects, both locally in the Louisville area and nationally
