About the Department:
Development and External Affairs (DEA) supports SMU by securing funding for University priorities; by promoting meaningful involvement in the life and work of the University; by heightening international, national, state and local awareness of SMU; and by supporting the enrollment of a diverse and able student body.
DEA comprises the offices ofOffice of the Vice President,Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, Development Services, Program Services and Donor Relations,Marketing and Communications,Principal and Major Gifts, and School and Project Development.

About the Position:
This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
The position assists the Athletics Development Office with donor acquisition and retention strategies and supports the department's annual giving efforts.
The position reports to the Assistant Athletics Director for Development within the Mustang Club. The role will be a key contributor to the department's fundraising efforts as SMU enters the Atlantic Coast Conference on July 1, 2024.
Key responsibilities include developing an annual appeal strategy, developing new donor acquisition strategies and developing new affinity group strategies. Some event management and content creation duties required.
Essential Functions:
Annual Giving: In cooperation with the Assistant Athletics Director, develops an annual giving strategy to increase overall donation and membership totals to the SMU Mustang Club. Strategies include, but are not limited to: developing a multi-channel appeals calendar for annual solicitations, implementing a data-driven strategy to increase current donor giving and acquire new donors, and developing new affinity groups including leadership giving, women in sport, and parent/student/recent alumni giving. Assist with the department's current "Drive for 5,000" membership drive. Identify revenue generation opportunities, leveraging the existing donor benefits chart and priority point system to encourage increased giving. Partner with gift officers to support sport-specific fundraising efforts through lead generation and giving solicitations to support annual goals and yearly funding priorities. Assist with SMU Giving Day, partnering with Annual Giving & Alumni Relations to leverage university-wide messaging to increase Athletics donations.
Donor Engagement: In partnership with the athletics marketing and ticket sales divisions, measures donor engagement as defined by events attended, emails opened, years as a donor, email opens/click through and patterns of giving. Works with athletics stewardship staff members to properly recognize engaged donors and gift officers to identify how engagement levels might lead to increased giving.
Events: Assists the Athletics Development Operations staff with the execution of donor events, including, but not limited to, home/away tailgates, donor receptions/luncheons/dinners, award ceremonies and lettermen's gatherings.
Communications: Assists Athletic Development Operations staff with content creation for digital and social channels.
This position requires working occasional special events hosted by the division on specific evenings and weekends.Position also requires occasional travel for away game competitions and donor events.
This position requires cellphone usage, the ability to check e-mail regularly, and the ability to respond to situations that require immediate attention.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree is required.
A minimum of two years of work experience is required.
Internship, volunteer experience and/or work experience in higher education or collegiate athletics preferred. Development experience desired.Work experience that includes reporting, event planning, data analysis and synthesizing information is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills with the ability to disseminate information to precise and effective written communications. A strong customer service orientation is essential.
Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced team environment. A strong focus on attention to detail is essential.
Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, spelling and grammar. Database experience with Blackbaud and/or Paciolan preferred. Experience with and/or a strong working knowledge of PowerPoint or other graphic software is a plus.
Candidate must have the ability to quickly learn new applications.
