Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). One (1) year of full-time experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services in an educational setting. In lieu of a Master's degree, a Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and three (3) years of full-time experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services in an educational setting may be considered. Experience coordinating projects, programs, and/or events.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) or certification in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Education or related field. Additional years (2+) of full time experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services setting. Understanding of NCAA Compliance Rules (played a Division I, II or III sport, coached in collegiate athletics or as a staff member in a collegiate athletic program). Experience within a higher education institution. Previous experience with a Division I Athletic Program. Experience with students with intensive support needs.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Director of Academic Success will assist in the overall coordination of all academic services provided in support of all Stony Brook’s student-athletes. They will develop, implement and oversee specific educational support programs and the staff that manage them, as well as initiatives within the Goldstein Family Student-Athlete Development Center. Their main responsibilities will fall in the areas of academic support services including advising, tutoring, study halls, at risk programming and facilitation of college transition programming. The Director will also work in close collaboration with academic units across the campus and within the Department of Athletics and execute all duties in compliance with NCAA policies and procedures.

  • Academic Advising/Intensive Need Student Athletes Program Planning: Assist in the development, assessment and implementation of the academic advising services offered to Stony Brook student-athletes as such services relate to NCAA progress-toward-degree requirements and established institutional requirements.  As assigned by the Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Success, the Director will be personally responsible for the academic advising of several assigned teams and the respective individual athletes. Coordinate the best system for successful individual and team study halls for assigned teams. They will assume a primary role in the day to day operations of the study halls for all Stony Brook teams within the Goldstein Family Student- Athlete Development Center.

  • Supervisory Management: Assist the Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Success in the management of all aspects of daily operation of 6,000 square foot Goldstein Family Student-Athlete Development Center. This will include the management of full time staff members and one or more programs or initiatives. 

  • Academic Success Program Planning: Serve as a liaison across campus for various related offices and serve as the point person in the management and implementation of one or more programs/initiatives within the Goldstein Family Student-Athlete Development Center. With this, the role of the employee will include some oversight of full time staff members. 

  • Administrative Responsibilities & Reporting: Collaborate with the Assistant AD for Academic Success, athletic department administration, coaches and university staff members on any other issues relative to the successful development of Stony Brook University student-athletes. Assist when necessary in the periodic collection and dissemination of academic information to liaison for NCAA, conference office and institutional awards and year-end records. Provide student-athletes, coaches and athletics administration with detailed reports of grades, credits earned, degree declarations and issues affecting eligibility. This also includes monitoring and assisting with calculation and forecasting the yearly and multiyear APR for assigned teams. 

  • New Student Orientation: Provide Office of Orientation and Family Programs with accurate records for all incoming students-athletes. Monitor math, chemistry, writing, and foreign language placements, as well as potential AP and college credits for all freshmen and transfer students prior to initial full time enrollment at Stony Brook. Ensure student-athletes are adequately orientated to the university and athletic department. 

  • Tutoring: Assist in the oversight of the tutoring program and staff that manages it. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring and training tutors, scheduling tutorial sessions, preparing necessary paperwork for payroll and evaluating tutors with feedback from Academic Advisement Assistants, faculty, and student-athletes. Also responsible for ensuring to function within the rules of the NCAA and the institution.
