Who We Are
Simon Fraser University is a leading research university, advancing an inclusive and sustainable future. Our purpose – the essence of SFU – is to create and connect knowledge, learning and community for deeper understanding and meaningful impact. We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.
Currently, SFU is the only Canadian member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)—the largest collegiate sports organization in the world. Our student athletes represent SFU while competing nationally and internationally in 16 varsity sports within two member conferences - the Great Northwest Athletics Conference (GNAC) and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). However, SFU is expected to join U SPORTS as a collegiate member for the 2027-2028 season, which will require a transition from USA competition to Canadian competition after 1 final year in the NCAA (2026-2027).
About the Role
The Director, Athletics provides leadership and overall direction for SFU's varsity athletics program, ensuring it continues to meet the evolving needs of student-athletes, the university, and the broader community. The role is responsible for long-term planning, maintaining a relevant and financially sustainable sport model, and enhancing the systems that support student-athlete well-being, academic success, and athletic development. The Director works in close collaboration with coaches, staff, alumni, and external partners to strengthen relationships and expand opportunities that advance the varsity program's goals. Additionally, the Director oversees the daily operations of varsity athletics, including compliance with competitive framework regulations, scheduling, event management, communications, and budget management. The Director fosters an environment where student-athletes can excel both on the field and in the classroom, while contributing to the broader objectives of the Athletics and Recreation department and the University.
Qualifications
Master's degree in Business Administration or Kinesiology and eight years of management experience in a post-secondary athletics program with comprehensive knowledge of practices and policies at the NCAA-level, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
