Reporting to the Superintendent of Demonstration Elementary and Secondary School, the Director of Athletics and Physical Education assumes the responsibility for the vision, development, management, coordination, and supervision of a competitive K-12 athletics and physical education program consisting of sports programs, athletic training program, physical education classes, fitness program, physical education teachers, coaches, staff and student-athletes for a five-day program at KDES and a seven-day program at MSSD.
Job Description:
Provides visionary leadership, strategic planning, risk assessment, risk prevention programs and risk management, and policy development for the athletics program; maintains an athletics program that is committed to the Clerc Center’s mission and strategic priorities; works with Administrative and Operations department to manage funds from revenue generating activities for the Athletic Department; and maintains an athletic program that emphasizes the student-athlete concept and philosophy.
Sets the vision for the entire Clerc Center athletic program; focuses on strengthening the student experience and the Clerc Center community’s well-being through directing all K-12 sports teams; administers the strength and conditioning program in such a manner that reflects positively on the image and reputation of the Clerc Center at all times, in accordance with the Clerc Center’s mission; and implements new programs as appropriate.
Oversees and supervises a comprehensive athletic program for Athletics; assures that student-athletes receive timely medical examinations for sports eligibility and proper attention in the event of injury; and ensures that all student-athletes receive the best possible education on the prevention of athletic injuries and medical care in case of an athletic injury or illness.
Ensures the K-12 Physical Education program adheres to a standards based approach to teaching; and provides best practices instructional support to the teachers.
Ensures athletic training services to all athletic teams and their student-athletes with the proactive goal of preventing athletic-related injuries and illnesses; evaluates and treats athletic injuries; and provides injury-related counseling and education to all student-athletes.
Ensures a thorough knowledge of and enforces sports rules and regulations (NFHS, DCSAA, and other various leagues that KDES/MSSD are members of) and of appropriate policies and procedures; evaluates performance and recommends personnel actions; coordinates training activities, workshops, and professional development programs for the athletics staff; and guides the department in updating programs as needed.
Administers the overall athletic budget, including approval of expenditures.
Directs the interviewing and hiring of all head and assistant coaches for athletic teams and athletic sponsors; administers the coaching salary schedule and ensures payment of compensation; develops and implements evaluation strategies; provides leadership and direction in the preparation of coaches for competition; designs team strategies, plays and techniques for the most effective delivery of athletic skills; and approves practice schedules.
Supervises and evaluates the physical education teachers at KDES and MSSD, the Coordinators of Athletics at KDES and MSSD, Recreation Specialist, and the athletic trainer; and provides support to the Coordinators of Athletics by supporting their skill development in advising, supervising, and evaluating.
Supervises and provides guidance to Athletics staff to formulate goals and objectives; promotes national mission priorities and initiatives; and provides instructional leadership to staff who are assigned to enhance the educational and athletic achievement of students.
Ensures adherence to guidelines for NFHS, DCSAA, and other leagues that KDES/MSSD are members of; oversees student-athletes academic eligibility; and ensures the timely and accurate processing of compliance forms.
Serves as the point of contact for all tournaments hosted by MSSD; and collaborates with key personnel in the planning of the tournaments.
Serves as one of the Administrators on Call for the Student Life Program; works with other departments and agencies in regard to student safety; and supervises and ensures the health and safety of minors on multiple teams at multiple locations.
Ensures internal athletic training policies and procedures including emergency action plans, a concussion management program, weather policies, and other necessary policies for Athletics; and serves as a building marshal and primary emergency contact for all emergency events in the gym or involving athletes off campus.
Collaborates with the Academic and Student Life leaders as well as the student athletes to foster improved academic performance and personal well being of all student-athletes.
Assures that the athletics program is designed to meet the needs of individual students with concern for interests, disabilities, special talents, and individual styles and paces of learning; and communicates with families and meets with families who have concerns or questions about student safety or programming
Establishes and maintains positive relationships with external vendors for sponsorships, donations, etc. of sports teams and the overall athletic program.
Develops and implements long term planning regarding not only fiscal needs for operations and capital improvements, but internal goals for strengthening the department through staff expansion and program development.
Develops and administers departmental policies and procedures; and develops, maintains, and distributes handbooks for student-athletes, coaches, and other staff.
Serves as the Athletics representative on the Clerc Center Crisis Leadership Team and the member of the MSSD Leadership Team and the Clerc Center Leadership Team.
Oversees training related to game management for staff and student event staff on such topics such as crowd control, dispute resolution, reporting complaints, protocols, specific duties during events and emergency procedures; and ensures the fostering of a positive environment for student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans.
Oversees the planning and notification of sports camps and awards activities.
Maintains Booster Club engagement; collaborates with stakeholders to revitalize and sustain an active Booster Club, fostering community involvement and support for athletic programs; and coordinates fundraising efforts, provides guidance to Booster Club members, and ensures transparent management of funds to optimize the club's impact on the athletic department's success.
Administers consistent public relations, publicity, and information dissemination regarding athletic events and achievements in collaboration with the Director of Communications.
Participates in regular staff meetings; arranges and attends athletic functions and league meetings; and implements and ensures personnel involved in managing interscholastic sports to attend clinics, workshops, and other training activities.
Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree.
A minimum of four years of professional experience with athletic administration, sports coordination, or a related field.
Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in a K-12 setting.
