Position Summary Information
The Director of Athletics (AD) is responsible for the overall character, content, and quality of the university’s intercollegiate athletic programs. In addition, the AD is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Athletic Department and providing a strategic vision for the future of the department. The AD reports to the provost and works in collaboration with the president and other members of the Lewis community to support Lewis’s mission and vision.
MISSION, VISION and STRATEGY-Model the university Mission through dedicated job performance, service excellence to constituencies, respectful collaboration and active support of the University’s Mission and Catholic and Lasallian higher education.-Ensure that the student/athlete experience is of high quality and in support of the academic integrity of the institution, including providing appropriate academic support.-Develop and implement strategies to ensure our academic performance are competitive with our peer and aspirant institutions.-Plan for present and future initiatives; collect and analyze data on intercollegiate athletic trends, activities, and services; make departmental/program enhancements as needed.-Build a strong culture of compliance and maintain the overall compliance of each team relative to GLVC, MIVA, and NCAA requirements.-Serve on GLVC, MIVA and NCAA committees and task force when assigned or nominated.-Implement, manage and collaborate across the Lewis community on initiatives outlined in the Athletic Strategic Plan. OVERSIGHT AND MANAGEMENT of ATHLETICS OPERATIONS -Plan, prioritize, and direct the efforts of the university’s coaching staff; schedule and manage athletic facilities, events and tournaments; oversee the selection of sporting event referees, umpires, etc; provide for the transportation needs of all student athletes.-Formulate, initiate and administer departmental policies and procedures for the Athletics Department.-Prepare and effectively administer the annual budget for Athletics.-Appraise, manage and direct/oversee the maintenance and care of the university’s athletic fields and facilities. OVERSIGHT and MANAGEMENT of ATHLETICS PERSONNEL -Develop and implement an annual professional development plan for all Athletics Department personnel.-Provide leadership, direction and training to support staff and clearly communicate performance output expectations and evaluation measurements.-Conduct evaluations of staff performance (at least annually) and determine appropriate actions for improvement.-Make recommendations to the Provost for appointments, promotions, leaves, retention and terminations as appropriate for the Athletics staff.-Develop and implement a hiring plan to ensure staff diversity. RECRUITMENT and SUPPORT FOR STUDENT ATHLETES -Ensure that roster size of all teams is met or surpassed.-Provide for the training and health maintenance needs of students athletes, including insurance coverage.-Oversee the utilization and coordination of student workers and graduate assistants involved with the university’s athletic programs.-Ensure that the Student Athlete Advisory Committee is an active presence on campus.-Provide oversight and coordination of the Intercollegiate Athletic Advisory Committee.-Oversee the proper maintenance of student athlete records.-Work closely with the University NCAA Certification of Eligibility Committee.-Prepare and submit NCAA Squad List Forms and provide Financial Aid information, by sport, to the Conference Commissioners to ensure Lewis University’s NCAA eligibility requirements. MARKETING, COMMUNICATIONS, and ADVANCEMENT -Develop and implement marketing strategies relative to intercollegiate athletics.-Organize and host athletic sports banquets athletic award ceremonies.-Develop and implement fundraising and ticket sales efforts relative to intercollegiate athletics and create game-day excitement for events.-Work cooperatively with the university Sports Information Director in preparing and providing sporting event information, publications, and schedules. OTHER-Serve on university committees and/or task forces as assigned.-Perform additional job related duties as delegated by the Provost.
A master’s degree in sports management or related field. A minimum of five years successful supervisory/coaching experience at the college or university level. A clear understanding of NCAA guidelines and sporting event rules and regulations. Strong oral and written communication skills. Working knowledge and experience in fiscal/budgetary management.
Previous recruiting and fundraising experience.
