This position will aid in efforts to deliver a first-class linear and digital television broadcast experience and will be a self-motivated, team-oriented, organized, problem solver who will coordinate and lead all live event video broadcasts of home athletics events and assist with in-game production elements. Position will collaborate with an extensive group of internal and external stakeholders including facility and operations, information technology, marketing, athletic communications, the Big Ten Network, the department’s multimedia rights holder, campus organizations, conference, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure the best event viewing experience possible. The position will aid in the design, development, execution, and implementation of events as well as the staffing and training of the broadcast production room and in venue videoboards. Staffing will include a mix of full-time, part-time, and student staff that will work directly with the Big Ten Network Student U program, the conference office, and the University of Washington.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Collaborate with a diverse team of campus staff, consultants, and external partners on the design, integration, and execution of the department's Production Control Room and the Big Ten StudentU program.
• Develop, implement, document, and troubleshoot pro-active processes, workflows, and offer guidance and support to the engineering team with preventative maintenance for computers, production equipment, distribution systems and engage with vendors and technical staff for repairs.
• Oversee scheduling and staffing for broadcasting and videoboard production at events.
• Act as production manager of live event broadcasts over various platforms, including linear, digital and in venue displays.
• Collaborate with an extensive group of internal and external stakeholders including facility and operations, IT, marketing, athletic communications, ICA senior leadership the Big Ten Network, the department’s multimedia rights holder, campus organizations, conference, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure the best event viewing experience possible.
• Independently troubleshoot and solve issues as they arise during live productions
• Guide a team of students and game-day operators/freelancers to operate and work all events
• Actively recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student personnel and up to one full time employee.
• Knowledge of digital video and web streaming including online platforms. Integrate webcast, streaming, and IP technologies in the delivery of web-based media.
• Aid in the design, development, execution, and implementation of events as well as the staffing and training of the broadcast production room and in venue videoboards.
• Work with Big Ten Network Staff in terms of requirements, event schedules, and production needs to meet desired outcomes.
• Build a community and collaborate with peers in the industry.
• Build a collaborative production community and collaborate with peers in the industry to stay abreast on all new technology supporting live event production.
• Develop and strategize on long-term procedures and policies in which the UW ICA Broadcast department will follow.
• Contribute to protocols reflecting industry best practices that best positions UW for success regarding live broadcasts and videoboard production.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism or related field.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in an Operational or Broadcast Engineering role in the collegiate or professional sports industry.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Demonstrated ability to document work with technical drawings, spreadsheets, and schematics.
• Demonstrated knowledge of video fiber infrastructure and connectivity between venues.
• Knowledge of fiber optic and radio frequency video signal transmission systems.
• Knowledge of video and audio signals for quality control for in-venue operations.
• Ability to be resourceful, research equipment documentation and solutions to problems, and be proactive in systems issues prevention and resolution.
• Experience with running multiple shows concurrently.
• Knowledge of Daktronics scoreboard video systems.
• Professional operating experience with video switchers, audio consoles, replay and graphics machines.
• Specific in-depth experience with broadcast technical or engineering work.
• Specific experience with Video Switchers, Replay Systems, Broadcast routing, Graphic and Video playout systems.
• Due to the large emphasis on event-support, this position includes many nights and weekends above and beyond daily responsibilities. Ability to work a flexible schedule, be on-call, support productions remotely as needed, and work sporting events and events that may occur on holidays and weekends.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in both control-room and in-field engineering situations and have a demonstrated passion for teaching and leading student work forces.
• The ideal candidate will also have a proficiency in IT & IP based workflows, common A/V setup & servicing and Daktronics infrastructure.
• While not required, candidates with specific broadcasting or engineering certifications will strongly be considered.
• Working knowledge of university, conference, and NCAA rules.
