The Director of Development, Major Gifts is a leadership role within the Tennessee State University’s athletics department, focused on securing significant financial support through major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. This position is instrumental in developing and maintaining relationships with high-net-worth donors to advance the financial sustainability and competitiveness of the athletic program.
Key Responsibilities
Major Gift Strategy:
Develop and implement a comprehensive major gifts strategy to secure philanthropic support for the athletic department.
Identify and prioritize major gift prospects aligned with the program’s strategic priorities.
Donor Cultivation and Solicitation:
Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors through personalized engagement, meetings, and communication.
Develop and execute solicitation strategies for major gifts, emphasizing the impact of philanthropy on the athletic program.
Prospect Research:
Conduct thorough research on potential major gift donors to inform cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Provide insights and recommendations to leadership on prospect viability.
Collaboration with Athletics Administration:
Collaborate with athletics administration, coaching staff, and other relevant stakeholders to align major gift fundraising efforts with program priorities.
Keep stakeholders informed of fundraising progress and opportunities.
Proposal and Presentation Development:
Create compelling proposals, presentations, and other materials to articulate funding needs and impact.
Ensure that major donors are well-informed about the transformative potential of their contributions.
Stewardship and Recognition:
Implement effective stewardship practices for major donors, ensuring regular communication and recognition.
Develop and execute donor recognition programs and initiatives.
Campaign Involvement:
Play a key role in capital campaigns or other comprehensive fundraising initiatives, contributing to the attainment of campaign goals.
Data Management:
Oversee the accurate and timely recording of major gift interactions in fundraising databases.
Collaborate with data management teams to ensure data integrity and reporting accuracy.
Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in a related field
Extensive experience in major gift fundraising, preferably in higher education or athletics.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with high-net-worth individuals.
Familiarity with fundraising software and data management systems.
Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a criminal background check as mandated by Tennessee State University.
